Admission and Licensure Background Checks

  • For Program Admission

All candidates completing an initial licensure program (undergraduate teacher education, MAT, school counseling, school psychology, and speech-language pathology) must have an approved background check for program admission.  Undergraduate candidates should complete this process early so that it does not delay acceptance into the teacher education program.

  • For Initial and Provisional Licenses

For both provisional and initial licenses, an approved background check that is less than one year old is required before the license will be issued.  For background checks more than one year old, repeat both parts of the background check process described below.

  • For License Renewal

The UCA College of Education is an approved Arkansas Department of Education LiveScan site and can provide this fingerprinting service to currently licensed educators who are completing the license renewal process.  License renewal requires both parts of the background check process detailed below.

PART 1: CHILD MALTREATMENT REGISTRY CHECK

For the Arkansas Child Maltreatment Central Registry check, submit the application with payment following the directions on the form. The form to submit for child maltreatment registry check is available here.

Notes for completing the Child Maltreatment Central Registry Check:

  • Pre-service and currently licensed teachers, mark Licensed Teacher as the applicant type.
  • You must sign the form in the presence of a notary.  You may go to Mashburn 100 (the Dean’s Suite) and request one of the administrative assistants to notarized your form.
  • The $10.00 payment must be either a check or money order.
  • You are strongly encouraged to pay by check so that you have evidence of your payment.
  • Mail your completed form with payment to the address at the top of the page.

Allow 4-6 weeks for your child maltreatment registry check to clear.  If you have questions or problems, contact the Arkansas Department of Human Services at (501) 682-0405.

PART 2: CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUND CHECK

Follow the steps below to complete your criminal history background check using the LiveScan system:

A.  Pay for your background check.

  • Directions for paying for your LiveScan are available here.
  • The cost for the criminal history background check is $38.25.
  • Access the LiveScan payment site here.
    • UCA teacher education students and UCA faculty/staff select University of Central Arkansas for District/Location and use 8800021 for the Verification Code.
    • Non-UCA students/interns and educators not employed at UCA should contact their school district for the correct location and verification code.
    • All UCA teacher education students select EDUC Teacher (Pre-Service) for Reason for Fingerprinting.
  • Print your payment receipt and bring it to your LiveScan appointment.

B.  Complete the background check consent form available here.

  • Be sure to select the correct reason for your background check.
    • Prior to internship for an initial license select Teacher (Pre-Service).
    • Others should select the appropriate choice.
  • Print your consent form and bring it to your LiveScan appointment.

C.  Choose your LiveScan location.

  • Currently, fingerprint is not available at UCA.  You can complete the fingerprint process at these locations:

  • You may select another LiveScan location.  A list of additional LiveScan sites is available here.  Most sites require an appointment for fingerprint scanning.  Call your selected location to schedule an appointment.
  • You may pick up a fingerprint card from Mashburn 118 and have ink fingerprints completed at most law enforcement agencies.  You must use the card from Mashburn 118.  Do not attempt fingerprinting without this special card.

At your scheduled LiveScan appointment time, bring the following:

  1. Your printed payment receipt (from item A above)
  2. Your printed consent form (from item B above)
  3. Your government issued ID (e.g., driver’s license)

Arkansas Educator Licensure System

To verify that your background checks have cleared, use the Arkansas Educator Licensure System (AELS).  To access your record, login to your account at the site below and select View current license information. Only when current dates for ASP, FBI, and Central Registry are entered have you completed the background check process.
