Alternate Insurance Requirements

UCA international students have the option of requesting a waiver to use an alternate insurance policy. Proof of alternate insurance coverage is required each semester students are enrolled. Students who fail to provide proof of alternate insurance coverage will be placed on LewerMark insurance and have the semester’s insurance fee placed on their account.

Acceptable Alternate Insurance Plans:

UCA international students are not allowed to purchase a private insurance plan from a U.S. based provider.  The only alternate insurance plans which may be considered are plans provided by:

  • A student’s home government or sponsoring agency OR
  • A private, third party insurance provider from the student’s home country  OR

Additionally, students must provide official documentation, in English, with U.S. dollar values, that this alternate insurance plans provides:

  • Minimum $250,000 coverage per injury, accident, or illness per policy year

    • Students enrolled in the Fall semester must have health insurance coverage from August 1-December 31st
    • Students enrolled in the Spring semester must have health insurance coverage from January 1- July 31st

How to Submit Alternative Insurance Plan

Students who have insurance plans that meet the above requirements may submit a waiver to use their plan instead of the university approved insurance plan.

New Students

New international students who wish to use an alternate insurance plan must submit the following to

  • LewerMark Insurance Waiver Request form
  • Copy of their entire insurance policy, in English, with U.S. dollar values. A letter from the insurance company or a brief summary of benefits will not be accepted.

Deadline:  Two weeks after classes begin for the first semester they are enrolled

These documents will be forwarded to LewerMark for their recommendation on whether the requested policy should be accepted. However, the final decision to approve or reject any alternate insurance will be made by the Office of International Engagement.

Students submitting an alternate insurance waiver for the first time will have the insurance fee for the appropriate semester on their student account until their request has been reviewed. If approved, the fee will be removed. Students who wish to pay the balance of their student account can either: (a) wait until the fee is removed; (b) pay all tuition and fees except for the insurance fee; (c) pay the entire account balance, and receive a refund if the request is approved and the fee removed.

Returning Students

Returning international students who have previously had a waiver request approved do not need to submit a new waiver request each semester. However, they do need to provide proof that the insurance coverage continues each semester they are enrolled. Proof of coverage should be submitted to Failure to do so will result in the students be enrolled in the LewerMark insurance plan and having the International Insurance Fee placed on their account.

Deadline: First day of classes each semester
