Alternate Insurance Requirements

UCA international students have the option of requesting a waiver to use an alternate insurance policy. The university recognizes two groups of students in this regard:

  • Group A: Students who began their program of study after August 1, 2017 are required to purchase LewerMark insurance or an approved alternate plan.
  • Group B: Students who began their program of study prior to August 1, 2017 and have been purchasing approved alternate coverage may continue to do so.

Group A

Starting August 1, 2017, UCA international students are not allowed to purchase a private insurance plan from a U.S. based provider.  The only alternate insurance plans which may be considered are plans provided by:

  • A student’s home government or sponsoring agency OR
  • A private, third party insurance provider from the student’s home country  OR
  • A United States employer plan, purchased by a student’s parent, spouse, or other relative who is living or working in the United States and has listed the student as a dependent on his or her insurance plan

Additionally, students must provide official documentation, in English, with U.S. dollar values, that this alternate insurance plans provides:

  • Minimum $250,000 coverage per injury, accident, or illness per policy year
  • Minimum $50,000 coverage for medical evacuation
  • Minimum $25,000 coverage for repatriation of remains
  • Maximum $500 deductible per policy year
  • Continuous coverage for the entire semester in which the student has enrolled in classes or is living in UCA housing

Students who wish to use one of the above insurance plans must provide documentation that their policy meets the below requirements. Continued proof of coverage will be required before the beginning of each semester of classes students are enrolled in. Group B

Students who began using an alternate insurance provider prior to August 1, 2017 may continue using their alternate policy as long as the policy continues to meet the below minimum requirements:

  • Is written in English

Students who fail to provide proof of alternate insurance coverage will be placed on LewerMark insurance and have the semester’s insurance fee placed on their account.  These students will no longer be able to submit alternate insurance from U.S companies and will be subject to all requirements to students in Group A.
