Watch A Short Video about Immunizations and Health Care in America
UCA Immunization Policy
All students are required to provide legal proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) to the UCA Student Health Clinic. All students will have a hold on their student account preventing them from registering for classes until they have provided proof to the Student Health Clinic that they have received these vaccinations.
If you have had the MMR any time in the past, you will have the opportunity to present documentation, in English, showing you have received the vaccination. You may not have to receive the MMR at UCA if you have sufficient evidence of previous vaccination. MMR vaccinations received before your first birthday are not valid. Shot records should be printed out and brought by students to Global Welcome.
Students who have not previously received the MMR vaccination will have a opportunity during Global Welcome. For questions concerning your immunization record see the Student Health Clinic website or email them at shc@uca.edu.
International students are also required to take the T-Spot test, which tests for tuberculosis. Please see below for more information about the MMR vaccinations and the T-Spot test. Failure to complete either of the MMR vaccinations or the T-Spot test can result in a student being dropped from enrollment and so becoming out of status.
Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
The immunization against Measles, Mumps and Rubella takes place in 2 doses. The first dose will be given to you during Global Welcome. The second dose must be received one month after the initial dose. If you have already received one or both of the MMR immunizations in the past, you must provide a copy of your immunization records in ENGLISH. Please bring a copy of your immunization records with you to orientation.
We do not recommend that you receive the MMR within 30 days before you orientation. This could cause some health concerns if you take two doses of MMR within 30 days of each other. Each dose of MMR costs $84. You will need to pay in cash or credit at the time you receive the immunization. Learn more about the MMR vaccine at http://www.immunize.org/vis/vis_mmr.asp.
Getting the T-Spot Test
Also during Global Welcome, you will go to the UCA Health Clinic to be tested for Tuberculosis (TB) through a method called the T-Spot. The cost for this will be $50, which must be paid at the time of the test.
A positive test will not result in your dismissal from UCA, but you will need to receive further tests at an additional cost. In preparation for your T-Spot test, you should drink plenty of water and eat a good meal before your test. Results from the test come back in approximately one week. You will be notified if you have a positive result. If your result is positive it does not mean that you have TB, it simply requires further testing. You will then need to make an appointment for a $25 Chest X-Ray. The Student Health Clinic will schedule an appointment for you to speak with a doctor at the Faulkner County Health Department to receive the results of the Chest X-Ray.
Receiving the T-Spot test at the Student Health Clinic is required by Arkansas state law for your attendance at UCA. The Student Health Clinic will not accept TB test results taken outside the US. If you have received the T-Spot test in the US, you may submit the complete bloodwork analysis to the clinic and they will determine whether or not you need another test.
Summary
In order to comply with Arkansas law and UCA policy, and to register and stay in your classes, you will need to receive 2 MMR vaccines ($84 each) and get the T-Spot ($50) within 90 days of your arrival. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from classes, which will further result in the termination of your immigration status. Of course, we want you to stay healthy throughout the full course of your stay at UCA, so please, if you have questions or would like more information, please contact us!
