Annual Vacation Statement of Understanding
WHY DO I NEED TO SIGN THIS STATEMENT?
This policy and the following information applies to all prospective students who:
- will enter the U.S. on an F-1 student visa for the first time for the Spring semester (January – May)
- were not enrolled in on-campus courses at another institution on an F-1 student visa in the previous Fall semester (August-December).
MORE DETAILS:
F-1 students are eligible to take an annual vacation after completing a full academic year of study in the United States. An academic year for undergraduate students is defined as 30 instructional weeks and completion of 24 credit hours. Students who begin study on their F-1 visa in the Spring semester will have only completed 15 weeks of the required 30 weeks of study at the end of the semester and are not eligible for an annual vacation for the entire summer (May to August). Undergraduate students who begin their F-1 visa in January are required to enroll in 6 credit hours over the summer and enroll in the following Fall semester.
Please note that the majority of classes are offered in June-July (Summer I session) and July-August (Summer II session). Graduate students who begin their program in January are required to enroll full time in the summer (normally 3-6 credits hours depending upon program) and enroll in the following Fall semester.
