Dr. Derek Stoughton serves as Assistant Professor of Music, Associate Director of Bands, and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Central Arkansas. In this role, he directs the Bear Marching Band and Purple Rage Basketball Band, conducts the Symphonic Band, and teaches music education courses. Under his leadership, the UCA Athletic Bands have collaborated with GRAMMY-nominated artist Sean Ardoin, and the Symphonic Band has produced reference recordings for Carl Fischer Music. Dr. Stoughton also serves as Artistic Director of the Conway Community Band, leading over 150 area musicians each summer.

 

Prior to his appointment at UCA, Dr. Stoughton served as Interim Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at Southeastern Louisiana University, where he led the Wind Symphony in performance at the Louisiana Music Educators Association conference. Dr. Stoughton began his career teaching in the Texas public schools of McKinney, Pflugerville, and Austin, where ensembles under his direction consistently earned superior ratings and sweepstakes awards at UIL contests.

 

An active arranger and scholar, Dr. Stoughton’s creative work and critical editions, including his published edition of Joseph Bologne’s Overture to “L’Amant Anonyme,” are published by Murphy Music Press, Hal Leonard, and DevMusic. He has presented research at regional & national conferences and maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator across the United States. A dedicated advocate for student leadership, he serves as the Southwest District Governor for Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity.

 

Dr. Stoughton holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting and Literature from the University of Colorado Boulder, a Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from Oklahoma State University, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Studies and Human Learning from the University of Texas at Austin. His primary conducting teachers include Dr. Donald McKinney, Dr. Joseph Missal, and Dr. Robert Carnochan.
