 Campus Recreation Water Competency Skills Test

*American Red Cross approved Water Competency Sequence.*

 

In order to independently swim (in the whole pool), you need to be able to successfully complete all 5 of the following skills, without any equipment:

  1. Entering the water safely (a feet first jump) and coming back to the surface.
  2. Orientating themselves into a swim position, and moving about 25 yards in the water.
  3. Turning and orientating themselves towards the exit of the pool (where they safely entered).
  4. Treading water for 1 minute
  5. Exiting the water safely.

 

In order to independently swim (in the shallow end), you need to be able to successfully complete all 5 of the following skills, without any equipment:

  1. Entering the water safely (a feet first jump) and coming back to the surface.
  2. Orientating themselves into a swim position, and moving 37.5 feet in the water.
  3. Turning and orientating themselves towards the exit of the pool (where they safely entered).
  4. Treading water for 1 minute
  5. Exiting the water safely.

 

*This is the minimum someone should know to be safe engaging in the water*

 

All who are 17 or under are required to take this water competency skills test.
