A LOVE SUPREME | jazz ensemble | JAN. 18-20
Profound, complex, intimate, and powerful, A Love Supreme represents jazz-legend John Coltrane’s acknowledgement of God’s love for humankind. Join six world-class jazz musicians from across the country as they meet in Conway for a special “club performance” at Kings Live Music on Tuesday night, followed by a Thursday night performance of Wynton Marsalis’s ensemble version of Coltrane’s masterpiece at Reynolds Performance Hall. For this rare and provocative performance, the guest musicians will be joined by UCA faculty and the Studio Jazz Ensemble, featuring UCA’s Matthew Taylor, Ross Ahlhorn, and Justin Cook. Guest artists include Matthew Vashlishan, sax and woodwinds; Nathan Eklund, trumpet; Tony Baker, trombone; and The Joshua Espinoza Trio (Joshua Espinoza, piano; Kris Monson, bass; Jaron Lamar Davis, drums).

Chad Bradford | Acting, Directing | FEB 10-17
Actor/director Chad Bradford has acted Off-Broadway in New York City at the American Globe Theatre and with national tours, playing leading roles in Macbeth, The Fantasticks, and A Christmas Carol. He is also a recipient of the Creative Community Fellowship awarded by National Art Strategies for Voices UnCaged, a program that brings the theatre arts into prisons. Originally from Little Rock, Bradford earned a BA in Theatre from UCA and an MFA in acting from Penn State University.

Elizabeth Rush | Environmental Writing | FEB 22-23
Elizabeth Rush is the author of Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore and Still Lifes from a Vanishing City: Essays and Photographs from Yangon, Myanmar. Her work explores how humans adapt to changes enacted upon them by forces seemingly beyond their control, from ecological transformation to political revolution. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Harper’s, The Atlantic, Pacific Standard and the New Republic, among others. She received her MFA in nonfiction from Southern New Hampshire University, and teaches creative nonfiction at Brown University.

AMERICAN HORN QUARTET | brass ensemble | FEB 27-MAR 1
Regarded as “the finest brass chamber ensemble in the world” by the American Record Guide, America’s oldest classical music review magazine, the American Horn Quartet helped establish the modern horn quartet as a serious genre of chamber music. Over the course of many decades, the Quartet has presented hundreds of concerts and masterclasses worldwide, including venues in London, Los Angeles, and Zürich, where their exuberant performances, which combine existing repertoire with their own prizewinning compositions and arrangements, have brought audiences to their feet.

Chase Kahwinhut Earles | Pottery | MAR 8-11
Chase Kahwinhut Earles is a Native American traditional potter, contemporary artist, and ambassador of Caddo heritage and tradition. He has won numerous awards at prominent Native art gatherings including those at Red Earth Art Center (Oklahoma City), Southwestern Association of Indian Arts (Santa Fe), Cherokee Art Market (Catoosa, OK), Southeastern Art Show (Ada, OK), and many others. Earles will conduct a traditional pit-firing demonstration on campus and discuss how Caddo traditional pottery making represents continuity in tribal identity and heritage, linking contemporary Caddo with their ancestral past. This residency dovetails with the Jamie C. Brandon Center for Archaeological Research Annual Spring Lecture Series. For lecture information, visit uca.edu/go/earles.

Tanya Orellana | scenic design | Isabel Rubio | costume design | MAR 9-10
Scenic designer Tanya Orellana creates performance spaces for theatre, dance, opera, and puppetry. Originally from San Francisco, she is a core member of the award-winning ensemble Campo Santo (Spanish for “sacred ground”), an organization committed to developing new American theatre and nurturing diverse new audiences. As an organizing member of La Gente: The Latinx Theatre Design Network, Orellana seeks to combine design and civic practice to dismantle oppressive practices in the field of theatre.
Mexican costume designer Isabel Rubio works in theatre, dance, film, and television, bringing a rich visual vocabulary to her work. Her work has been featured internationally at Russia’s historic Mariinsky Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Saint Petersburgh, theStanislavsky Theatre in Moscow, and México’s Morelia International Film Festival in Morelia, Michoacán, to name a few. Rubio’s credits include a fellowship in Costume Design at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art and an exhibit at the Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space in Prague.

Gasali Adeyemo | Fibers
Nigerian-born Gasali Adeyamo is a world-renowned indigo fiber artist known for his work in batik, tie dye, and cassava paste resist methods. Beginning in1990, he carried out six years of intensive training and teaching at the Nike Center for Arts and Culture in Osogbo, Nigeria. Adeyamo has taught workshops at the World Batik Conference (Boston), Cross Culture Collaborative Inc. (Ghana), Snow Farm (Williamsburg), and the New Mexico Fiber Arts Center (Española).
Akeem Ayanniyi | Drums & Drum Making
Akeem Ayanbisi Ayanniyi, an acclaimed drum maker and drummer, is from the Western Nigerian town of Erin Oshun, near the historic art center of Oshogbo. The “Ayan” prefix of his name indicates that he can trace his family lineage back 700 years to the Yoruba deity of drumming, Ayan Agalu. Ayanniyi is the ninth-generation member of his family to play the traditional Yoruba talking drum, having performed since the age of five. His fame as an artist and performer has led him to tour much of Africa as well as Germany, Brazil, Sweden and the United States.
Sue Schroeder & Core Dance | Contemporary Dance
In more than 40 years of work in the arts, Sue Schroeder has created 110 original dance works for theaters, museums, green spaces, architectural works, and water environments. Her work has appeared throughout the United States as well as Mexico, Israel, France, Germany, Poland, Georgia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Iceland, United Kingdom, Sweden, Canada, Guatemala, and Hungary. Schroeder is recognized as a leading arts activist and mentor, and the founding artistic director of Atlanta-based Core Dance. As a contemporary artist and dance maker, Schroeder focuses on the creative process, movement research & exploration, and dance-making as a catalyst for social change.

“Facilitating Pandemic Healing through the Arts”
In response to a changed and ever-changing world since COVID-19 entered our lives, this project brought together textile art, drumming, and dance/movement as tools to teach, to question, to connect, to inspire and, ultimately, to heal through the arts. Ever aware that more than two years of isolation, anxiety, frustration, and grief over lost loved ones have passed, Sue Schroeder and Core Dance propose a series of workshops and public performances designed to assist teachers and students as well as essential workers in the healthcare professions—occupational therapists, and physical therapists—learn how to decompress through arts-based experiences and how to celebrate our humanity. During March 28-April 8, 2022, this project brought a trio of national and international artists to the UCA campus: Nigerian fiber artist Gasali Adeyemo, Nigerian drum maker and drummer Akeem Ayanbisi Ayanniyi, and Core Dance led by choreographer Sue Schroeder.
These flags were created by BOST consumers under the guidance of Arts at BOST Creative Coordinator and Artist Cathy Mason and are utilized in thePlanetary Dance event at Ft. Smith and The Colors of Love/The Colors of Life performance at UCA.
Artists in Residence worked with students at several local schools, including Morrilton High School, who took part in this Earth Run, taught and led by Sue Schroeder and Core Dance.
