Tylar Bullion is the adjunct instructor of trombone and jazz at the University of Central Arkansas. Originally hailing from the mountains of East Tennessee, Bullion calls upon his diverse musical upbringing to bring a unique and informed perspective to his musical and pedagogical endeavors.

 

Actively pursuing the inclusion of all styles in performance, he has performed regularly with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra (where he enjoyed performances with Greg Tardy, Delfeayo Marsalis, Brian Lynch, and Jeff Coffin) and the Holland Symphony Orchestra alike. In addition to jazz band and orchestral work, Bullion has performed in a cornucopia of theatrical productions, contacted musical services, was the trombonist of he Western Michigan University Graduate Brass quintet (2016-2018), featured soloist with the Cereal City band, and a founding member of the Odyssey trombone quartet, the 2022 IWBC Ginger Turner Chamber Competition grand prize winner. Additionally, Bullion was the winner of the 2015 USAF Band of the Golden West audition for both the principal trombonist of their wind ensemble, as well as lead trombone for their jazz band. Bullion can also be heard on the Vance Thompson’s Five Plus Six record “Such Sweet Thunder,” Ramajay Intercoastal’s “Jamboulé,” Cereus Bright’s “Winds of Change,” and his quartet’s debut self-named album “Odyssey,” which will be released in 2024.

 

As a teacher, Bullion has held a private studio for 12 years; many of those students went on to place in regional and state competitions, and of those several have received music scholarships at universities in the Southeast. He has given masterclasses at several universities and public schools, as well as guest recitals. Bullion has served as adjunct Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Carolina Pembroke, adjunct adjunct lecturer of Music History at Lindsay Wilson College, Trombone Studio Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas, and the Trombone Teaching Assistant at the University of Western Michigan. In additional to collegiate at private teaching, Bullion was on staff as the private trombone teacher at Forestwood Middle School in Lewisville, Texas.

 

Bullion has been fortunate enough to study with many well-respected pedagogues, such as Dr. Natalie Mannix, Mr. Don Hough, Dr. Steve Wolfinbarger, Dr. Daniel Cloutier, Mr. Vance Thompson, and Dr. Alex van Duuren. Their influence is unequivocally responsible for Bullion’s success, and their teaching styles serve as a model for his own.

 

Bullion holds a Bachelors of Music in Jazz & Studio Music from the University of Tennessee, a Masters of Music in Trombone Performance from Western Michigan University, and is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Trombone Performance at the University of North Texas.
