Projectors

Purchase any projectors through the UCA contracts detailed below. Please do not purchase projectors through other sources such as Best Buy, Office Max, Amazon, or GSS. In order to expedite tech support and lamp replacement, UCA IT only supports the purchase of a few selected projector models at a time.  The supported projector models are changed regularly when the manufacturer stops producing them (end of life or “EOL”) or when they are no longer available from our vendor.  The projectors listed below are UCA IT’s current supported classroom projector models and should work for the majority of classrooms on campus. If you need to purchase a projector and you don’t know if the projectors below will work for your use case, or what you need exactly, contact IT’s A/V Services department for consultation. IT may recommend a different model in some cases. All prices below are estimates.  Updated Feb 9, 2024.

Aspect ratio is a ratio of a display’s width to its height. There are several common ratios in use today. UCA IT usually recommends a 16:10 aspect ratio projector for most classrooms. This ratio is often a happy medium between the older 4:3 format and the 16:9 ratio used by most modern televisions. Projectors using this aspect ratio are usually capable of accepting and displaying a wide range of resolutions with minimal image distortion.

When the signal being sent to a display does not match its native resolution, the resulting image will be scaled and sometimes cropped as necessary in order to display it on the screen. Image distortion can occur when the signal being input to a display is in a wildly different aspect ratio or is otherwise too far outside the normal range of signals for that display. If you are buying a new 16:10 projector and your existing computer monitor is one of the older 4:3 models, it might be a good idea to replace your computer monitor as well, in order to minimize image distortion and future-proof your classroom setup. If you are installing a new TV instead of a projector and you have a 4:3 monitor, you will definitely need to replace the monitor. Sending the same image to both a modern TV and an older 4:3 computer monitor will result in severe image distortion (or no image at all) on either the monitor, the TV, or both.

NOTE: If you are mounting this projector on a ceiling and there is no existing cabling or mounting hardware where you intend to mount it, cabling and mounting hardware will need to be installed by the university contractor at the department’s expense. If there is already existing cabling and mounting hardware, it may be necessary to replace the cabling and/or mounting hardware for compatibility. IT will make that determination based on the particulars of the room — whether existing hardware is compatible, newer non-VGA equipment that needs to be connected to the projector (PC, Apple TV), futureproofing, etc. Before purchasing, consult with IT’s A/V Services department so we can make sure everything will work correctly.
