Source of Light: The Hearne Collection

January 26 – February 24, 2023

The Baum Gallery will host a new exhibition Source of Light: The Hearne Collection, January 26 – February 24, 2023. This exhibition is curated together by Garbo Hearne, director and co-owner of Hearne Fine Art; Archie Hearne, M.D., co-owner of Hearne Fine Art; and Brian Young, director, Baum Gallery.

Source of Light has three components. In the entry gallery, visitors will view 16 works by four historic African-American painters. They are Robert Scott Duncanson (1821-1872), Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901), Charles Ethan Porter (1847/49-1923) and Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937). The Baum Gallery must acknowledge the generosity of the collector Juan Rodriguez, New York, NY, for generously facilitating this loan through the Hearnes.

In the Baum’s largest gallery, Source of Light: The Hearne Collection continues with the contemporary work derived from the Hearne’s private collection. It should also be noted that many of the artists in their collection have also been represented by Hearne Fine Art, a Little Rock-based institution that has celebrated African-American art and culture since 1988. The Hearnes embraced the idea that their relationship with art extended to personal relationships with artists, the need to educate the public, and their desire to create a premier cultural hub for African American art in Arkansas. Works in this gallery include printmaking, bronze, clay, alabaster, photography, fiber art, oils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, artists’ books and others. The source of this work is nearly as varied. The Hearnes have a deep familiarity with components of visual arts, the literary arts, and the vast art market including relationships with a wide-reaching network of artists, other dealers and collectors, curators, academics, related art fairs, markets, historic material, auction houses, and the internet.

In the Baum’s third and more intimate gallery, Source of Light finishes with is a modest selection of powerful works by Louise Mandumbwa, UCA, BFA ’20 and Yale University, MFA expected ’24. This current work is based on her computer-figural work. Mandumbwa has also been mentored and represented by Hearne Fine Art since 2017. Mandumbwa has also enjoyed time at the Chautauqua School of Art Residency in upstate New York and the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation Residency in Berlin New York.

A reception will be held on January 26, 2023 at the Baum Gallery from 4 pm – 7 pm.

The University of Central Arkansas’s Baum Gallery will host a new exhibition Cig Harvey: From Red to Violet, running August 25 – October 13, 2022. This exhibition is curated by Brian Young, director, Baum Gallery with assistance from Donna Pinckley, professor of photography in the department of Art & Design, UCA.

Cig Harvey (b.1973) is a British-born artist and writer living in Maine and working in large-format color photography and poetry. Rich in implied narrative, saturated in color, and deeply rooted in the natural world, her work is devoted to the topic of what it is to feel.

Harvey has published five sold-out books: Blue Violet (Monacelli/Phaidon, 2021), Reveal (with Debbie Fleming Caffrey and Andrea Modica; Yoffy Press, 2020); You an Orchestra You a Bomb (Schilt Publishing, 2017); Gardening at Night (Schilt Publishing, 2015); and You Look at Me Like an Emergency (Schilt Publishing, 2012).

Outdoor Photographic Projections by Cig Harvey: September 28 and 29, at the UCA football stadium scoreboard; they will then be projected again on October 11 and 12. Time: 8-10pm.

Public Gallery Talk by Cig Harvey: October 11, 1:40-2:30pm at the Baum Gallery

Public Lecture by Cig Harvey, October 12, 6:30pm.

“‘Painting’ is an exhibition meant to show all the possibilities through this most traditional medium,” said Young. “In this show, there are artists who work purely abstract and those who work realistically with the figure. By selecting a range of painters, students will understand the breadth of contemporary painting. Our audience will see irony, experiences and contemporary issues through the lenses of abstraction, portraits, landscapes and works in between.”
