The first-year experience in the Art and Design program is known as the foundation year. Foundations students experiment with physical processes and ideation methods that are likely unusual or new to them. The emphasis over the course of this year is not on making “perfect” objects, but on developing critical and creative thinking skills. When students eventually move to the major studio areas, they are prepared to explore the depths of their interests as a result of the experience. The annual Epilogue Exhibition highlights students’ accomplishments, introduces their work to the rest of the department, and sets the standard for the incoming cohort who will see the work the following fall.
