English Major with Licensure FAQs
An English major with licensure prepares you to become a teacher of English in grades 7–12 in Arkansas schools. An English major without licensure does not prepare or license you to teach English in schools.
Yes, students pursuing an English major–with licensure or without licensure–must pass a 2000-level foreign language course.
Declare a major in English with a concentration in English, Licensure. You can do so by completing this form. You will need to log in with your UCA credentials.
Students getting a degree in English with licensure must declare a minor in Teaching & Learning. You can do so by completing this form. You will need to log in with your UCA credentials.
Candidates for teaching licensure may earn no lower than a C in any English or professional education course.
Candidates for teaching licensure must apply for admission to the teacher education program (more specific information is provided below). You can start that process here.
Program of Study and Requirements
- Following this program of study will ensure that a student will finish in a timely manner with all necessary coursework and requirements for both Level I and Level II admission.
- Requirement check sheet for students admitted before 2020.
- Requirement check sheet for student admitted after 2020.
- A student must complete 37 credit hours with at least 24 hours of upper division credits, the same as an English major, and an additional 38 hours of teacher preparation.
- You must apply to be admitted in the Teacher Education program. This link should you get started.
