Society of Physics Students

The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional physics association specifically designed for students.  Membership is open to anyone interested in physics. Besides physics majors, our members have included majors in chemistry, biochemistry, computer science, pre-engineering, mathematics, pre-medical, and other fields.

The SPS exists to help students to transform themselves into contributing members of the professional community.  Course work develops only some skills necessary for the workplace or graduate study.  Other skills needed to flourish professionally include effective communication and personal interactions, leadership experience, the establishment of a personal network of contacts, the presentation of scholarly work in professional meetings and journals, and outreach services to the campus and local communities.

Local SPS outreach may include activities such as physics demonstrations to high school or elementary school students and tutoring for students of physical science in the department.

Social and professional functions have included guest speakers from various disciplines and studies, presentations of the research being done by the professors in the department, movie night, viewing of pre-recorded physics lectures from great minds of science, opportunities to attend scientific conferences, bowling night, and the SPS picnic.

The SPS is a great opportunity for individuals with an interest in science to interact with students and professors who share those interests.  We encourage anyone with an interest in physics to attend one of our biweekly meetings and learn what we are all about.

SPS is hosting the Star-Be-Que this Friday, November 15th, from 6:00pm-9:00pm at the Crafton Alumni Pavilion-So come join us for food, stargazing, and fun! We are using this event to raise funds for SPS, so if you’ like to have a hot dog and sides, please bring a $5 donation with you! Enjoy!!!
