Honors in the Major

Philosophy Honors in the Major

Students who major in philosophy and who meet the minimum GPA requirements are encouraged to consider writing an honors thesis as a part of the UCA College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) Honors in the Major program.

The Honors in the Major program is open to any student who meets the following requirements:

  1. Is a declared philosophy major
  2. Maintains a minimum 3.25 grade point average overall, and a 3.5 grade point average in the major
  3. Completes at least 60 hours or has completed the first semester of their junior year, or equivalent
  4. Obtains approval from faculty mentor within the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies who is willing to advise the project, as well as the agreement of two additional faculty readers (this is the thesis committee)

Once a student has been approved by the department to do Honors in the Major, the next steps are:

  1. Register for PHIL 4301: Philosophy Honors Tutorial (this requires special permission; please contact the department chair)
  2. Complete the Honors in the Major Form and Thesis Release Form and submit it to the registrar by the end of the third full week of the semester in which the student expects to graduate (usually this is the beginning of the semester in which the thesis is written)
  3. Write an original honors thesis at the direction of the advisor and other committee members
  4. Pass an oral examination/thesis defense conducted by the thesis committee
  5. Deliver a signed completion form and a final copy of the thesis to the registrar by the end of the last week of instruction of the semester of graduation (usually the end of the semester in which the thesis is completed)
