ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Program Overview

The Department of Nutrition and Family Sciences offers the Family and Consumer Sciences Education Program, which is recognized as one of Arkansas’ premier educator licensure programs. We prepare future educators to teach essential life skills that promote the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Rooted in a tradition of excellence and innovation, the program combines a strong foundation in FCS content areas—such as nutrition, human development, personal finance, and housing—with professional education and real-world teaching experiences. Students benefit from personalized advising, diverse field placements, and faculty who are dedicated to mentorship and student success.

While we welcome any out-of-state candidates, completion of any program, other than an initial licensure program, may not lead to licensure or endorsement in Arkansas or in the state in which you reside. It is your responsibility to check with your state’s department of education to determine if the license or endorsement requirements are met through the program of study. If you are a potential out-of-state candidate, please contact the program coordinator directly.

Graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and licensure required to become confident, effective teachers in middle and high school settings, with opportunities for leadership and career advancement across Arkansas and beyond. BSE graduates are prepared for licensure in secondary (7 – 12) FACS. In addition to FACS secondary teaching positions, career opportunities in business, industry, and the public sector are available to the graduate with an education degree in FACS.
