The Power of Culture

Today UCA’s Dietetic Interns spent the day learning about culture. Cultural competence, cultural awareness, tolerance, hidden bias, diversity – all terms essential for a health practitioner’s vocabulary. Students explored their own personal biases and learned about implicit privilege. Then, they ate a lunch with dishes from around the world. During lunch students wore glasses to mimic what vision is like as we age.  What a day!

Have You Seen the New Dietary Guidelines?

dga-2015

The 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines is designed to help Americans eat a healthier diet. Intended for policymakers and health professionals, this edition of the Dietary Guidelines outlines how people can improve their overall eating patterns — the complete combination of foods and drinks in their diet.

From The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: “The Academy supports the key recommendations of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, which recommend that everyone ‘consume a healthy eating pattern that accounts for all foods and beverages within an appropriate calorie level.’ The overall pattern of food eaten is the most important focus of healthy eating and has been related to a decrease in prevalence of chronic disease.” See the statement from the Academy here.

Hats off to Personal Finance and Dr. MAC

These are pictures of Personal and Family Finance students working on their PFF Music Project. Students created a personal finance message they wanted to express; selected background music of a song they knew; created new lyrics to support their message; added visuals; and posed for their album cover before they played their presentation for the class. Class members voted on their favorites. The top 2 musical groups received bonus points. Videos can be seen here:

FACS Editorial

As this semester comes to an end, students are turning in projects and the finals rush is upon us. As I reflect on the semester, my first back at UCA as a professor, I think about what went well, what didn’t, and how I will improve. The students really impact us and I’m not sure if they know it or not.

When I look at some of the images of things that occurred over the semester I am absolutely humbled by what they can accomplish. Individually and collectively, every student I have had makes a difference. They are someone’s child, sister, brother, mom, dad, friend…..they are everything to someone. I hope they know how remarkable they are and that their dreams are achievable.  “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.”  -Theodore Roosevelt
