Program Description
In this two week trip to Germany, students will explore several towns central to the upbringing and storytelling of the Brothers Grimm, which are linked by the German Fairy Tale Route. This route spans the region north of Frankfurt and is nationally endorsed as a cultural site and prime tourist destination. Immersed in fairy tale tourism, this trip will explore sites such as the Grimms’ birthplace town of Hanau and university town of Steinau by train. We will travel on charter buses for full day excursions to the Pied Piper’s Hameln, the Sleeping Beauty Castle, and Rapunzel’s tower, reading the fairy tales inspired by these locations. We will also explore the role of fairy tales in creating community values, shaping aesthetics, and the existential questions they raise in us.We will spend a total of 5 nights in Göttingen and 9 nights in Frankfurt, with 2 free days in Frankfurt for your own exploration!
Faculty Leaders and Course Offerings
Hello! My name is Christine (she/her), or Dr. Case. I teach children’s and young adult literature, fairy tales, and gender and sexuality studies. I lived in Madrid for 4 months when I was in undergrad and can speak/read/write Spanish, though I’m not nearly as fluent as I was as a result of study abroad when I was younger! I have done international research more recently in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden.
Courses offered by Dr. Case:
- ENGL 1350 Intro to Literature
- ENGL 2370 Intro to Fiction
- ENGL 3325 Advanced Readings in World Literature
- ENGL 4361 Literature for Adolescents
- ENGL 4370 Gender and Sexuality in Literature
My name is Dr. Taine Duncan, and I love traveling and teaching. In my undergrad experience, I studied abroad at Oxford, as a grad student I did dissertation research in Berlin, Germany, and I have a background studying both German and French. In 2016 I co-led a study abroad to Paris, and had a fabulous time introducing students to both sites familiar and new. I am fortunate to serve on an international board, and to have researched in Taiwan, presented in the UK, Canada, and Singapore, and traveled with my husband to places from the Netherlands to Japan. As chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, the work in my department highlights the value of cultural awareness and exchange; and I’ve worked collaboratively to ensure that we can offer COIL opportunities and international conferences at UCA so that every student has a chance to have an international learning experience. I look forward to co-leading another study abroad!

Health and Safety
Students registering for programs should carefully read through all health and safety information provided during the application process. In addition, students should honestly complete the ‘Health and Safety Form’ so that any health related concerns may be adequately accommodated on study abroad programs.
Participants will be enrolled in comprehensive international insurance for the duration of programming. It is the student’s responsibility to extend insurance cover if they stay abroad beyond UCA’s planned program dates. For information about international insurance coverage: https://uca.edu/globalstudy/health-and-safety/
Students must attend one health and safety meeting during the spring semester. Meeting dates will be announced after the application deadlines.
