UCA’s Geography Awareness Week & GIS Day Celebrations are here!!
Welcome to Geography Awareness Week 2024. Join the UCA Geography Department, Geography Club, and Gamma Theta Upsilon for a celebration of Geography and GIS through the theme of “Geographers Take Action”. See the schedule below for details of specific events and be sure to check out our social media throughout the week (links below) for Geography trivia and the 2024 edition of our Google Earth Scavenger Hunt.

- Pre-Geography Awareness Week Event:
- Tuesday, November 12: Red Cross Disaster Relief and Natural Disasters
- 9:25-10:40am, Math & Computer Science 104
- Join Dr. Flatley’s Geography of Natural Hazards course for a conversation with retired UCA Geography Professor and Red Cross-certified Disaster Responder, Dr. Jeff Allender. He will discuss his work on various natural disaster events in Arkansas and beyond .

- Monday, November 18: Promoting Geography and GIS at UCA
- 11am-1pm, Ronnie Williams Student Center
- Students and faculty from UCA Geography programs will be at the Student Center with information about our courses, helpful tips for accessing our campus-wide GIS platform, and geography-based trivia and games.

- 12-12:50pm, GIS in the Workforce: An Alumni Panel – Lewis Science Center 101
- UCA Geography alumni will discuss their experience as students at UCA and how they have used their skills as they’ve built careers following graduation.

- Thursday, November 21
- 12-3pm, International Education Week – Global Expo – Ronnie Williams Student Center Courtyard
- Drop by the UCA Geography table during this campus-wide event.
- 1:40-2:30pm, Humanitarian Mapping Using GIS – Lewis 101
- Bring your own laptop and learn about how GIS and Geography can be used for global engagement:
- GIS can be used to support disaster relief efforts around the globe and understanding how geospatial data are organized can be beneficial regardless of your major or career. This session will introduce the idea of Humanitarian mapping using OpenStreetMap and their volunteer outreach arm, the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team. Their work contributes to important mapping projects that will help areas recovering from natural disasters and other crises.
- Bring your own laptop and learn about how GIS and Geography can be used for global engagement:
- 5-7pm, Celebrating Geography Awareness – Lewis Atrium
- Join Geography Club members, Department faculty, and fellow students for a pot luck to celebrate Geography Awareness Week. Faculty and student research posters will be on display, geography-themed games will be played, and information about using GIS at UCA will be available.
- 12-3pm, International Education Week – Global Expo – Ronnie Williams Student Center Courtyard
- Friday, November 22:
- 12pm-?, Humanitarian Mapathon with OpenStreetMap – Lewis 101
- Join us for an afternoon of Humanitarian mapping (see information for the Thursday event for more information). Bring your laptop to join the campaign for as much time as you want; NO PRIOR GIS KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED!!!
- 12pm-?, Humanitarian Mapathon with OpenStreetMap – Lewis 101
Faculty and student research posters will be on display all week in the front hallways of Lewis as well as the displaced Geospatial & Environmental Applications Research (GEAR) Lab in Lewis 112.
