How do I host an intern?

What is an Internship in SLL?

With an internship, you have the chance to put your expertise in action, working in a place of business or non-profit organization. An internship counts for credit towards your major and degree and can be a boost to your career, providing an important experience for your resumé, and valuable contacts in your future field or graduate study. Former interns say that their internships were helpful “stepping stones towards life post-graduation” that provided a “genuine means of making connections and of opening doors to new paths and opportunities you perhaps never imagined existed.”

Internship Requirements in SLL

Alumnus Bradley Mullins and intern Brooklyn SolisTo be eligible for an internship, you need to be a major or minor in one of our programs and usually be in your third or fourth year, with a minimum 2.5 GPA

To initiate the process, you will reach out to the supervising agency in consultation with the Internship Coordinator for your field (see below). You will need to undergo the partner’s hiring process (including a job interview) and work 100-120 hours for them in exchange for one 3-hour upper-division elective in your major. To earn credit in a language program, you will need to do half of your work in the language or culture you are studying. Most internships in the SLL are unpaid, but if you are doing a language internship and driving or incurring other expenses, you may apply for a stipend from the Bradley Mullins Second Language Student Experience Enhancement Fund.

Nemi Shah, CAPCA Intern

I recommend other students give an internship a try. Not only will you gain real-life experience, but also build your confidence in applying your Spanish skills. Spanish provides countless options in various work fields. I specifically chose CAPCA to gain insight into non-profit organizations. Completing an internship allows you to explore potential areas you would want to work in while also receiving credit towards your degree.  -Nemi Shah, UCA alum and former Spanish intern

Kristina CogginMy English internship, in which I worked in the Torreyson Library Archives, was perhaps the best opportunity I have experienced in my college career… If you are pursuing or want to pursue completing a thesis, an internship is a great way to kickstart that process or add to an ongoing project. -Kristina Coggin, UCA alum and former English intern

Alexis Smith PeláezOverall, I would certainly recommend students earn credit by completing an internship. There is no better way to truly see just how many different ways your skills as an English major can be applied. It’s really almost limitless. What is more, internships also provide a wonderful and genuine means of making connections and of opening doors to new paths and opportunities you perhaps never imagined existed. -Alexis Smith, UCA alum and former English intern
