M99-10 – DR. GREGORY J. W. URWIN COLLECTION

Dr. Greg Urwin was born in Cleveland, Ohio, July 11, 1955.  He graduated from Borromeo Seminary High School in1973 and received a Bachelor of Arts from Borromeo College of Ohio in 1977, graduating Summa Cum Laude.  He earned a Master of Arts degree fro John Carroll University in 1979, and a Master of Arts from Notre Dame in 1981.  He completed his doctoral dissertation on “The Defenders on Wake Island’ and consequently earned his Ph.D. from Notre Dame in 1984.

Dr. Urwin taught American History at Saint Mary of the Plains College prior to coming to UCA.  He began his teaching career at UCA in 1984 as Assistant Professor of History. In 1988 he was promoted to Associate Professor of History.  He was promoted to full Professor of History in 1994, and continued to teach at UCA until the summer of 1999.

After leaving UCA Dr. Urwin became Professor of History at Temple University.  He has authored many books on military history and was responsible for the creation of  the Blue-Gray Association.  He was very active in living history while teaching at UCA and the Blue-Gray Association was involved in many Civil War reenactments.

Dr. Urwin authored Custer Victorious:  The Civil War battles of General George Armstrong Custer; The United States Cavalry: An Illustrated History; The United States Infantry: An Illustrated History, 1775-1918; Wake Island in World War II:  An  Annotated Bibliography; Facing Fearful Odds:  The Siege of Wake Island.

He has received the General Wallace M. Greene, Jr. Award, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation Research Grant, The University of Central Arkansas Council Grant, and many other awards.
