Former State Senator Guy “Mutt” Jones was born in Conway on June 29, 1911. His parents were Cora Henry Jones and C.C. Jones. His father was a country schoolteacher and a Conway businessman. Mr. Jones father died when he was twelve years of age. He was the youngest child of a family of nine children. According to his biography of 1968, Mr. Jones advanced himself through his own efforts and paid for his first bicycle by money earned from selling newspapers on the streets of Conway.
Mr. Jones graduated from Conway High School in 1928, the same year he won second place in the Arkansas High School debating contests. He attended Hendrix College and worked at the Jones Book Store in Conway selling typewriters to help pay for his education. In college, Jones was quite active in student life and was a yell leader for three years, served as president of the Hendrix Booster Club, and participated in the debating team for four years. He graduated from Hendrix College in 1932.
Additionally, from 1932 to 1934, Jones operated a service station in Conway and attended the Arkansas Law School in Little Rock during the evenings. He taught school at Joe T. Robinson High School in Little Rock from 1934-1936, and taught one semester at the Clinton State Vocational Training School.
In 1935, Mr. Jones passed the Arkansas bar examination and later served as an assistant to an established attorney in Conway from June 1936 to July 1937. He then began to practice law on his own and in 1937 was instrumental in organizing the Conway Young Business Men’s Association, for which he served two years as Secretary-Treasurer. He was also elected Secretary of the Conway Chamber of Commerce in 1937 and served in this position until 1942.
Mr. Jones served as Conway City Attorney from 1938 through March 1942. During this time, he was very active in all phases of civic life in Conway and Faulkner County. He served his community as scoutmaster, publicity representative for the Kiwanis Club (member since 1937), publicity agent for the Red Cross, Sunday School teacher in the Methodist Church, Master of the Green Grove Lodge No. 107, F. & A.M., 32nd degree Mason in 1941, Shriner in 1949, and other civic activities.
In December 1941, Mr. Jones married Miss Elizabeth Relyea of Almyra, and they had two sons, Guy H. Jones Jr. and Casey Jones. In March 1942, Mr. Jones was drafted into the United States Army as a private and was discharged as a Captain in May 1946. He served in the European Theater of War as a first lieutenant and Executive Office of Company L, 5th Infantry Regiment, 71st Infantry Division. He holds two European Campaign Ribbons and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
Soon after these events, in 1946, Mr. Jones became State Senator Jones when he was elected to the senate seat in the old 12th Senatorial District, which encompassed Faulkner, Perry, and Conway counties. He was re-elected to this seat in 1950. In 1952, Jones was elected to represent the new 14th Senatorial District composed of Faulkner, Cleburne, Van Buren, and Stone counties. He was elected to this seat again in 1956 and 1964. Jones continued to serve consecutive terms in the Arkansas Senate until his removal by fellow State Senators that took place on August 1, 1974. Jones was tried and convicted on income tax evasion, which caused his removal from the Senate. Consequently, Mr. Jones was suspended from practicing law for one year.
Among Senator Jones’ most enduring achievements was the creation of Lake Conway. This lake, a product of the Game and Fish Commission, is the largest man-made Game and Fish Commission Lake in the United States. Another crowning achievement was the location of the Arkansas Children’s Colony in Conway. Long known as the Arkansas Children’s Colony, the facility is now called the Conway Human Development Center. The Arkansas Educational Television Network along with the Office of Emergency Services can also be attributed to Senator Jones. Both organizations are headquartered in Conway, Arkansas.
Senator Jones was an extremely colorful and likable person who met no strangers. People gravitated to Jones due to his strong magnetic personality. After his suspension was lifted, he resumed his law practice until he suffered a major stroke in August 1985. Mr. Jones died as a result of the stroke on August 10, 1986.
