The Conway Rotary Club was founded April 26, 1921, although the charter was not formally presented until June 14 of that year. It became the 16th Rotary Club in Arkansas and was one of only 900 in the world. The next year it helped to establish the Russellville Club.
The Conway Rotary Club was organized when H.W. Barnes, a new member of the Central College music faculty, spoke with enthusiasm about his experiences as a Rotarian in San Antonio, Texas. This inspired 21 local business and professional men to meet at Central College on March 21, 1921 to express interest in bringing Rotary to Conway. The Conway Rotary Club became the seventh club in District 16, which included Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas.
In addition to Barnes, also leading the effort to start the club were Doak Campbell, president of Central College; Robert L. Jetton (Pastor) of the Presbyterian Church; ad Frank Farris (Banker). Jetton was elected as the first president, Farris as vice-president, and Dr. C.C. Roberts as secretary. These three officers, along wit S.T. Smith and B.W. Torreyson, comprised the first Board of Directors.
The admission of women into Rotary has provided the club with much greater diversity and leadership in the 1990’s as well as strengthened it within the community. In the fiscal year 1996-1997, Conway Rotary will be guided by its first female president – Adair Howell. Conway Rotary has grown significantly in stature and today boasts a chapter of over 100 active members. The records were donated to the UCA Archives in 1996.
