M96-04 – ANNIELAURA M. JAGGERS COLLECTION

The Lily Peter Biography began in 1980 by Ms. Annielaura Jaggers, who was born near the farm plantation holdings of Miss Peter and was published in 1993.

Lily Peter was born June 2, 1891, in Phillips County, near Marvell, in southeast Arkansas.  She died July 26, 1991 at age 100.  She was a gifted teacher, (began teaching at age 17), a published poet and a successful plantation owner during a time when it was rare for a woman to assume either role.  Her farm covered 7,000 acres in Phillips County.

She was also on author of short stories, photographer whose works were exhibited in museums and galleries and a writer of music and songs.  She helped establish the Endowment Fund for Music Appreciation and personally funded scholarships for many students of music.

In 1971, Gov. Bumpers named Miss Peter the Poet Laureate of Arkansas.  She is the author of eight books, including “Sea Dreams of the Mississippi” “Green Linen Summer”, and “Great Riding”.

Miss Peter was a member and state regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  She earned a masters degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville and studied violin, piano and voice at such schools as Julliard in New York, University of Chicago, Peabody Conservatory and Chicago Musical College.
