M95-03 Women’s Project, Transformation Newsletters

The Women’s Project was founded in 1980, as a grass roots organization intended to promote support for women’s issues in the state of Arkansas.  Originally called The Arkansas Women’s Training Project, it was operated under the direction of Suzanne Pharr.  The funding was issued from the Methodist Board of Global Ministries and focused on issues such as; abuse, rape, non-traditional employment, minority rights, and gay and lesbian rights.

Since 1980, the Women’s Project had been under the United Methodist Church as a project, then known as the Arkansas Women’s Project. By 1986, the group had acquired its own 501c3 and were an independent organization, though still recognized as a project by the church. They had created their own board of directors and decided to become a membership organization with a scope that included Arkansas, much of the South, and national work.

The Transformation Newsletter began its publication in April 1986. Within each newsletter there are articles pertaining to different issues for women, whether they be economic, diversity, domestic abuse/violence, jobs, womens’ movements, etc. Included are “Current Work” sections and upcoming conferences, concerts, projects, as well as wanted ads for volunteer work.

Note: The Transformation Newsletter is part of the Women’s Project Collection and is physically located in M95-03 Series III Box 1. For digital versions, please see the list below for available publications.
