The collection consists of the records of Church Women United in Arkansas. Records include the constitution, by-laws, history, officer directories minutes, financial records, correspondence, celebration information, project information, newsletters, photographs, and news clippings. It was donated to the UCA Archives by Church Women United in Arkansas on January 28, 1995.
The United Council of Church Women was organized in 1941 during World War II. Several peace programs were held throughout the war, and the Council sent considerable aid to Europe. The organization changed its name to United Church Women Church in 1950 when it joined eleven other organizations in founding the National Council of Churches. In 1966, “Church Women United” was chosen as the official name of the organization in order to emphasize unity among women. The Arkansas Council of Church Woman was organized in Little Rock in 1945. As of 1997, Church Women United had 19 active local councils in Arkansas.
Church Women United is a national movement through which Protestant, Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and other Christian women may express their ecumenical faith and work. Throughout it history, CWU has been active in promoting women’s rights and civil rights and in addressing social issues. The organization is committed to worldwide peace and to developing global relations with Christian women of other countries.
CWU sponsors 3 annual economical celebrations, World Day of Prayer, May Fellowship Day, and World Community Day.
