This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Clyde David Dollar. During his career Dollar held positions dealing with history and archeology. For a time he was the historical consultant for the Dakota Sioux Indian Tribe, and adjunct professor of history at the University of Arkansas.
Clyde David Dollar was born in Fort Smith on March 12, 1932, the son of Clyde Morgan Dollar and Rilla Belle Prater Dollar. He attended Kemper Military School in Booneville, Missouri, graduating with an AA in history in 1952 and from Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1955 with a BA in History. His post-graduate study included the University of South Dakota, the Deutsches Landesmusuen in Germany, and the University of Arkansas. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1960.
In the 1950’s and 60’s, Dollar participated in various archeological digs in Arkansas and other states, and was instrumental in excavating the first Fort Smith, sponsored by the National Park Service. In later years, Dollar also researched the Fort Smith Commissary and the Meeks Coca-Cola Plant, located within the national park.
While a Historical Researcher for the Rosebud Sioux in South Dakota in the later 1960’s, Dollar was a historical consultant for the film “A Man Called Horse”. He later served as a technical advisor for two movies that were never made.
During the 1970’s until his death in 1983 Dollar worked at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, where he was a graduate teaching assistant in the history department; he occasionally taught judo classes at the University also.
