This collection contains the correspondence, publications, writings, photographs, memorabilia, and general papers of the late Jane E. Stern of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Stern was a prominent environmental leader and activist. The bulk of the papers consists of environmental matters which date from 1965-1987.
Jane Rita Ellenbogen was born August 2, 1918 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, the daughter of Leonard E. and Bertie Berger Ellenbogen. She graduated from the Little Rock public schools then attended Little Rock Junior College (now the University of Arkansas Little Rock).
Mrs. Stern first became concerned about environmental degradation when she became a bird-watcher. In 1963 she helped establish the Jefferson County Audubon Society, and over the years she held every office in the organization. She also helped form many other environmental organizations, and she could always be counted on to rally concerned citizens to oppose projects that threatened the natural environment. She never lost her interest in birds, and worked diligently to save the Red-cockaded Woodpecker and other endangered or threatened species. In 1975 Mrs. Stern served as a delegate to the Arkansas State Constitutional Convention.
Mrs. Stern’s work was widely recognized. In 1971 she received the Arkansas Wildlife Federation “Water Conservationist of the Year” Award. In 1978 she was awarded the Federation’s highest honor, “Conservationist of the Year”.
Concerned about environmental contamination in her hometown, Mrs. Stern was instrumental in securing the Clean Lakes Study for Lake Pine Bluff. This study documented the presence of PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyl) in the lake. She chaired the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Pine Bluff Urban Water Management Study. Preservation of rivers and wetlands, and she was instrumental in stopping plans to channel Bayou Meto from Lonoke to the Arkansas River.
Suffering from cancer, Mrs. Stern died on December 16, 1989 at the age of 71. Her survivors were her husband Dr. Howard S. Stern; a son, Arthur M. Stern, and Ellen C. Stern, a daughter, as well as one grandchild.
