This collection contains the correspondence, manuscripts, and publications of Harold E. Alexander. Mr. Alexander was a well-known Arkansas conservationist who worked as a dedicated career employee at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. His positions included chief biologist and wildlife researcher, recreation planner, environmental consultant, endangered species coordinator and technical advisor for various conservation organizations, as well as the state. These papers and other materials chronicle Mr. Alexander’s contribution to the preservation of streams, wildlife, endangered species, and natural resources.
Alexander was born Nov. 23, 1909 in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Edward and Ruby Pringle Alexander. He began his career in the late 1940’s upon graduating from Texas A & M University and four years in the army. After a brief stay at Kentucky’s Department of Fish & Wildlife, he began working at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Although ultimately recognized foremost for his efforts in stream preservation, Alexander was active on a broad front of environmental issues. In addition to saving land resources, wetlands, and wildlife, he sought to stop problems caused by environmental pollution and protect ecosystems and habitats essential to man and other forms of life.
Alexander’s work received national recognition, including numerous awards and citations. Several conservation and wildlife organizations acknowledged his dedication and hard work. Among the honors he received were: the Sears Roebuck Wildlife Federation award for Wildlife Conservation (1966) and Water Resources (1969); American Motors National Award for contributions to streams and wetlands preservation (1973); and the Arkansas Wildlife Federation’s Conservationist of the Year Award in 1983. In 1970 President Nixon awarded Alexander a Presidential Citation for contributions to water resources conservation. Through his numerous writings, advice, and testimony at state/national hearings, Alexander made a major impact on the effort to preserve Arkansas’ Natural Heritage.
Alexander died at the age of 84 on Sept. 14, 1993. His wife Virginia Schooling Alexander; a son, Edward; three daughters, Ellen Harper, Frances Alexander, and Louise Black survived him.
