M88-01 – JOHN R. HUME COLLECTION

John R. Hume V was born in Doniphan, Missouri on June 19, 1911 to a prominent family.  Both his father and mother were medical doctors.  He attended Cumberland University and the University of Virginia, but did not receive a degree.  A member of the National Guard military training brought him to Little Rock in 1939.  The entire family moved there in 1940, and it was there that Hume spent the remainder of his life.

In 1950 he was hired by the Arkansas Highway Department as a researcher in the field of Labor Economics.  He held that position until 1953 when he was upgraded to Analyst I .  This job entailed economic research, analysis, and forecasting in highway and related fields.  Retiring in 1981, John took an active interest in state and local history and remained an active layman in the Episcopal Church until his death in December 1987.

The bulk of the papers consist of printed materials and photographs relating to the Arkansas Highway Department.  The collection also contains personal papers and an assortment of miscellaneous political papers.  Only a few documents are dated prior to the late 1940’s with most of them being dated from that time until the late 1970’s.
