Biographical Note:  

This collection contains the newsletters, correspondence, publications, news clippings, films, and reports from the Arkansas Ecology Center.  The organization’s purpose was to conduct environmental research and offer its findings to the public.  The Arkansas Ecology Center was first known as the “Friends of Arkansas” and then later as the “Environmental Information Center.”  On May 1, 1970, the Arkansas Ecology Center became an official domestic nonprofit corporation.  A seven member board of directors conducted the official business for the Center.  The Center was funded by public donations and small grants.  They became defunct by c. July 1981.

Scope and Contents Note:  

The main purpose of the Center was to conduct environmental research and provide information to the public. They accomplished this goal by maintaining a library of books, newspaper clipping files, and copies of environmentally relevant publications.  The majority of the papers deal with the Cache River controversy, and the rest of the collection consists of papers from the organization itself.  The bulk of the papers are from the period of 1970 to 1981.

This collection is arranged into five series:  Series 1 – Organization, Series 2 – Finance, Series 3 – Newsletters, Series 4 – Cache River, Series 5 – Oversized Map
