Biographical Note:  

James Knott “Uncle Mac” MacKrell was born in Houston, Texas on August 8, 1902. MacKrell was well known in Arkansas as a radio personality on Little Rock station KLRA.  He also founded Arkansas Academy, a Christian but non-sectarian children’s home at Arlberg.  A Baptist minister, he wrote numerous articles and pamphlets promoting the “Bible Lovers Revival.”  In addition to his radio career, MacKrell ran for governor first in 1948 on the Democratic ticket, but in 1970 he ran as a candidate under the Republican Party.  Included photographs captured MacKrell with Sid McMath, Winthrop Rockefeller, and Maurice “Footsie” Britt during the 1970 gubernatorial campaign.  MacKrell died while interviewing a group of teenagers on a radio show in 1972.


Scope and Contents Note:  

The papers of James Knott MacKrell are mainly comprised of newspaper clippings from the gubernatorial races of 1948 and 1970.
