Dr. Donald Edward Culwell was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 11, 1942.  He grew up in De Soto, Missouri where he became an Eagle Scout.  He earned a B.S. degree from Southeast Missouri State University (1964) and a M.A. in botany from Indiana University (1966).  Finally, he was awarded a Ph.D. in plant taxonomy from the University of North Carolina (1970).

Dr. Culwell became a teacher at the University of Central Arkansas in 1970, where he became the Curator of the Vascular Plant Herbarium (1970), Director of the Jewel E. Moore UCA Nature Reserve (1980) and a part-time Academic Advisor.  He also was the Overseer of the UCA Greenhouse Operations and a sponsor of the Biology Club.

Some professional positions Dr. Culwell held outside of UCA include being the founding President of the Arkansas Native Plant Society (1980), a member of the Arkansas Academy of Science and a member of the Arkansas Vascular Flora Committee.  He provided community service by leading nature programs and giving presentations to elementary schools and high schools, the Boy Scouts, and garden clubs.  In 2006, he went to Washington D.C. to serve as a representative for the Federal Endangered Species Act.

In his years of service to UCA, Dr. Culwell was awarded many honors including the University Teaching Excellence Award (1984-1985) and the University Public Service Award (2003). In 2010, he was awarded the status of Distinguished Professor Emeritus at UCA.

Dr. Don E. Culwell retired in 2007 from UCA after 38 years of service.
