In 1981, in recognition of the generous gift to the University of Central Arkansas by Jimmy and Cleda Driftwood, and in anticipation of future mutually beneficial programs in Ozark Culture, a proposal to establish an Ozark Heritage Institute was submitted. This proposal requested (1) an Oral History Office, (2) an Archives and Records Management Program, and (3) an Education Museum.
The Ozark Heritage Institute was charged with developing a program to collect sources and artifacts illustrating Ozark life and culture, as well as promoting public awareness of the significance of the people of the region. Additionally, the Institute was expected to encourage scholarly study of the history, literature, folklore, art, crafts, geography, and horticulture of the area.
Dr. Waddy Moore was officially named director of the Ozark Heritage Institute in 1983. Afterwards, the UCA Archives was established in 1986 with the purpose of promoting the use of these collections, arts, crafts, literature, and artifacts in order to encourage both scholarly research and public interest in the heritage of the State of Arkansas.
Due to the extraordinary efforts of the Driftwoods and UCA, this institution has provided us with a greater knowledge of our past and deeper understandings of the present. And with the exception of a museum at a physical location, the academic goals for this institution were met and currently being expanded upon.
