M04-01 – CRAIG O’NEILL (A.K.A. RANDY HANKINS) COLLECTION

Randy Hankins, whose radio and television name is Craig O’Neill, was born to Earnest Hankins and Judy Merritt Hankins in the Old Saint Vincent Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, on October 19, 1950.  The Hankins’ home was in Warren, Arkansas where the elder Hankins owned a hardware store.  Randy would attend kindergarten and first grade in Warren, the second grade through the fourth grade in Little Rock, and the fifth grade and part of the sixth grade in Helena.  He finished the second half of his sixth grade year in Little Rock and remained in the Little Rock School District graduating from Little Rock Central High School in 1968.

Randy is the oldest of four children.  His brother Phil Hankins works in radio in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  He has two sisters, Leslie Hankins Parker of Carlisle, and Kathy Hankins Kelly of west Little Rock.

After graduating from Little Rock Central in 1968, Randy enrolled at Arkansas State University (ASU) at Jonesboro.  In 1972 he received a Bachelor of Science degree from ASU in Radio/TV Journalism.  While Randy was at ASU he enrolled in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) for two years.  In addition, his radio career began at Jonesboro when he accepted a job at Jonesboro radio station KBTM.  He was known on KBTM as Randy Hankins.  One year later he would begin using the on-air name of “Craig O’Neill”

Prior to graduating from ASU Randy married Ruth Jane Fryer, an artist, in 1971.  The couple has two children, Abby Hankins Kirby and Thomas Hankins.  Abby Hankins Kirby is married to Josh Kirby and they have one child, Bella Rose Kirby.  Thomas Hankins, the son of Randy and Jane Hankins, is unmarried.

In 1972 Randy began working at KARN in Little Rock and worked in broadcasting and advertising sales.  The program director at KARN felt that the name Craig O’Neill had a better ring to it than Randy Hankins, so Randy became known as Craig O’Neill.

Randy joined the staff of KLAZ in the winter of 1978 and began making his famous prank telephone calls.  His first prank call was to Arkansas Governor David Pryor, and his opponent in the U.S. Senatorial race, Jim Guy Tucker.  Randy posed as Jimmy Carter in wishing both Pryor and Tucker luck in their upcoming election.

In 1981 Randy left the staff of KLAZ and began working at KKYK, becoming the number one disc jockey in Little Rock.  During his career at KKYK he continued to make prank telephone calls and traveled to Hollywood, California on several occasions.  He appeared in a movie that was made in Arkansas, titled-Pass The Ammo.  After ten years at KKYK Randy moved to neighboring radio station KURB in 1991.

Randy worked at KURB, which was known as B98.5, until December 1999.  While at KURB Randy helped charities raise money and estimates he has worked at more than 2,000 fundraisers for charity.  He is well known for freely giving of himself, his talent and his time to charitable causes.

On January 1, 2000 Randy made the move from radio to television, going from KURB to KTHV Channel-11.  Currently, Randy is the Sports Director for KTHV.  He jokes that to get the job at KTHV he parked at the front door of their station for months asking to be put on television.

The collection of Randy Hankins is officially known as the Craig O’Neill Collection.  Randy is much better known as Craig O’Neill than Randy Hankins, so it is in everyone’s best interest for the collection to carry his radio and television moniker. He will continue to add items to his collection as his career progresses with KTHV.

Randy and his wife Jane reside in Little Rock.  Jane continues to work as an artist and Randy spends his spare time by reading, writing, fitness training and horse racing.
