Program Description

Drawing Immersion
As an art student who has completed first year foundation courses, you are uniquely positioned to experience and artfully record your physical surroundings and real time events, through both practical illustration and creative critical response. The act of drawing–as a studio practice–is specifically suited to fully immersive experiences such as travel to new places, in its ability to record and respond to such stimuli in an immediate manner. That is, the artistic act of drawing can be quick or fast paced, without slowing or dulling the actual experience being recorded. Drawing is equally available to a ‘slow’ drawing process that requires careful study of an object and/or idea. With this in mind, this course based on site in Florence will allow you to explore various methods of capturing and describing the culture, language, architecture, history and (contemporary) sensual experiences of this historically significant and beautiful place. This course will allow you to address ideas about time and place, through a series of bespoke drawing projects inspired by the symbiotic energy created by you and your group of travel companions.

Nutrition and Family Sciences
Learning objectives will include studies about health and nutrition changes due to the economic vitality of the Florentine ruling families. Also, views of how the human form and body image were impacted due to the introduction of humanism. Other learning objectives will encompass the Italian culture and language, navigation of several forms of Italian public transportation, living in an Italian community, grocery shopping, studies of Mediterranean food and the arts of wine, olive oil and balsamic vinegar production.

Health and Safety

Students registering for programs should carefully read through all health and safety information provided during the application process. In addition, students should honestly complete the ‘Health and Safety Form’ so that any health related concerns may be adequately accommodated on study abroad programs.

Participants will be enrolled in comprehensive international insurance for the duration of programming. It is the student’s responsibility to extend insurance cover if they stay abroad beyond UCA’s planned program dates. For information about international insurance coverage: https://uca.edu/globalstudy/health-and-safety/

Students must attend one health and safety meeting during the spring semester. Meeting dates will be announced after the application deadlines.
