Productive Conflict for Organizations and Communities: Critical Thinking and Listening in Conversation about Poverty

This workshop teaches participants how to communicate effectively, listen critically, and, most importantly, create space for disagreement. Community and organizational leaders who embrace disagreement and regard differences of opinion as opportunities for growth and increased understanding will find their teams more resilient and prepared to meet challenges head-on. We will examine productive conflict in the context of conversations about poverty—an issue facing our community and at the center of many organizational missions. Participants will learn to think about this pressing social issue in new and complex ways. Using productive conflict, participants will consider methods of combating poverty that differ from those they have embraced previously; they will explore diverse perspectives and learn the value of weighing the advantages and disadvantages of various proposals. As participants truly engage, listen to, and learn from one another, they will come away with a more nuanced understanding of the issue at hand. They will also take away a flexible, repeatable process for engaging in productive conflict that they can use in their professional and personal lives.
