2023 Learning Series Topics
Session 1: Creating Valued-Conversational Spaces
A valued-conversational space is where individuals feel confident and safe to contribute their ideas, and perspectives and engage in dialogue and conversation. Organizations need to cultivate these spaces by engaging in practices that allow trust to grow and interactions between colleagues to be inclusive. This session explores the concept in detail and provides strategies individuals can implement in their organizational culture and teams.
Session 2: Developing your DEI framework and Collective Values
Organizations need more than declarations and solidarity statements to transform their cultures for equitable outcomes. The transformative works need an equity frame through which practices, policies, and ideologies are filtered. This session leads participants through exercises to determine what DEI values and attributes are essential for organizations and how to co-construct the definitions that guide equity work.
Session 3: Examining the Psychology of Oppression and Interpersonal Development
This session focuses on the personal journey and honoring where individuals are along the path toward equity. Next, the session examines how systems of oppression affect individuals who have been marginalized, minoritized, and historically excluded. Finally, the session focuses on several exercises designed to unpack narratives, source the personal values and beliefs that drive interactions, learned biases, and assumptions, and shape your experiences with others.
Session 4: Cultivating Cross-cultural Alliances and Teams
This session focuses on two theoretical frameworks to build functioning teams and drive equity. The practices and strategies presented are based on the Equitable-Social Change Process and the Functions of a Productive Team.
Session 5: Creating the Conditions for Organizational Change
This session focuses on the four elements of the equity ecosystem and builds upon the importance of conversation in a small group, 1-1, to implement substantive change and corrective and equitable action that identifies issues, leverages commitments, determines the actionable steps for change, and evaluates progress.
Session 6: Designing Strategic Equity Planning and Implementation
This final session walks participants through a strategic equity plan, implementation instrument, and audit protocol tool. Participants will leave with a plan of action to implement equitable change and measure progress and success. In addition, this session focuses on missions, visions, and how to effectively align the strategic actions for equity to the mission and vision.
