Community Mentors

What is a Community Mentor?

Each Living Learning Community has at least one Community Mentor who works closely with their Academic Coordinator to help students develop skills and connections that support their academic achievement, a better understanding of themselves and others, and a greater ability to balance their academic and social life. Community Mentors are student leaders who live in the residence hall and support freshmen in their LLC. 

Job Description

Living Learning Community (LLC) Community Mentors assist the Director and Academic Coordinator in the development, promotion, and execution of Learning Communities activities. Community Mentors (CMs) play a vital role in engaging students in activities that encourage personal, professional, and civic growth. It is, therefore, required that Community Mentors live in their community (except the commuter college) and are active within the learning community, and be visible to the constituents of that community. Community Mentors are paid to work up to ten hours a week and live in a single room at the cost of a double occupancy room. Please contact us at llc@uca.edu if you would like to learn more.

Community Mentors:

  • serve as positive academic role models both inside and outside of their Community
  • maintain confidentiality and utilize good judgment in sensitive matters
  • connect students with appropriate University resources.
  • promote UCA as an AVID Campus dedicated to Academic Vitality, Integrity, and Diversity

Position Requirements

Community Mentors:
  • must maintain high standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • must reside with the residence hall associated with the Residential College program which you are applying to be a Community Mentors (except the commuter college).
  • must maintain a 2.75 GPA.
  • must maintain a record of “no serious judicial issues”.
  • must agree to attend all Community Mentor training opportunities (including but not limited to August training and monthly training sessions).
  • must agree to complete the duties assigned below.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Academic Coordinator in the development, promotion, and execution of activities pursuant to each Community’s learning outcomes.
  • Promote curricular and co-curricular cohesiveness with the Academic Coordinator and First Year Seminar Faculty.
  • Meet weekly with the Academic Coordinator and attend other leadership meetings as needed.
  • Collaborate with and assist Academic Coordinators, Learning Community faculty, campus partners, and other Community Mentors in the execution of community engaged learning programs.
  • Attend and actively promote Learning Communities at recruitment events (e.g. Bear Facts Day)
  • Actively work towards developing an academically-themed community within their LLC program.
  • Mentors will be trained to understand and utilize software tools relevant to carrying out the duties of the position (e.g. CubConnect, GivePulse, etc.).
  • Mentors will be trained to understand and promote the use of the BearX Co-Curricular Transcript.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
