Honors Center – The Schichtl Center for Honors Education

– (the SCHED) is the home for Honors at UCA since 2024 when the Honors College relocated from its home of 42 years in McAlister Hall. The SCHED houses faculty and staff offices, classrooms, and gathering spaces, all designed with the needs and well-being of faculty, staff, and students in mind. In addition, Schichtl is also the home of one of our closest campus partners, the Center for Global Learning and Engagement. This partnership further unites our two divisions in a state-of-the-art facility that will better prepare our students as citizen-scholars in a global society.

The Middleton Forum (SSA 112B) is a multi-purpose lounge for events, social gatherings, and student study. Named for Glenda Middleton, who often served as a caretaker of the original Forum in McAlister, this room is a relaxing and sensory-friendly space for students to hang out between classes. Featuring free coffee and tea, a kitchen, and a water feature, the Forum is perfect for students looking to unwind or fuel up. The Forum is also adjacent to the outdoor patio, so that students can take their studying outside when the weather allows.

Seminar discussions are foundational to the honors experience at UCA, as such, Schictl features three unique seminar rooms each with a distinct theme and personality. The Sullard Seminar Room (SSA 109) highlights art created by students from the 40+ years of the honors college. The Larson-Rebolledo Seminar Room (SSA 111) showcases Honors College traditions from the annual Fall Retreat T-shirt to memorabilia from the first Honors classes. The Taylor Seminar Room (SSA 114) is a museum of artifacts and gifts from students who traveled abroad as one of over 1,000 recipients of a Travel Abroad Grant (TAG)

Media Room (SSA 115): “Large Group,” a near-weekly occurrence where all freshmen honors students come together and encounter new thinkers and ideas, is an Honors tradition. Decorated with nods to the original large group space in McAlister Hall, the Media Room in Schichtl is the new home of these lectures with two large projectors and an amazing sound system this space is perfect for large classes, film screenings, or special events.

Addison Reception Aera (SSA 101) is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday. Students are welcome to come in at any time and will usually find a variety of candy dishes to choose from as well as smiling faces to help answer any questions they may have.

Scott Dean’s Suite (SSA 101B-F) is the administrative hub of the Honors College. Named for former dean, Dr. Richard Scott, the suite is the location of the Dean’s and Associate Dean’s offices and also features a meeting room where prospective students and their families meet with honors staff as they take their first steps on their college journey.

Outdoor Classroom and Gathering Spaces: Right outside of the building are the campus’ newest outdoor learning and event spaces. With a large custom-built table, the outdoor classroom allows for up to 24 students and faculty to bring their conversations out of the classroom. Other outdoor spaces around the building are designed for study and relaxation.

Schedler Library and Reading Room (SSA 110) is a quiet place for reflection and study. The library honors the founder of the Honors College, Dr. Norb Schedler, whose office was a refuge or a location of epiphany for hundreds of students. Using photos of his offices in McAlister Hall and in consultation with those who knew him most, this space recreates that office and houses his library. Norb’s Library is a physical representation of his life and legacy.

Baker Conference Room (SSA 119) seats 16 and is occasionally used for small classes, but is primarily available for faculty, staff, and student meetings.
