Welcome
SLANT is the international journal of contemporary poetry published by the UCA School of Language & Literature (SLL). It appears in digital format twice a year: Spring (May) and Fall (November).
History of Slant
SLANT was founded in 1986 by Richard Hudson, a member of the English Department faculty at the University of Central Arkansas, who also served as editor until 1993. He was succeeded by James Fowler, another member of the UCA English faculty, whose tenure as editor stretched from 1993 to 2018. Faculty member Sonya Fritz shepherded the journal through its transition to an online publication from 2018 to 2022. Michael Blanchard, a poet and adjunct faculty member, is the current editor.
With generous support from UCA administration; the University’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; and the UCA Foundation, SLANT has consistently sought and published original work by some of the finest contemporary poets from around the United States and beyond.
Graduate Assistantships
In addition, each academic year SLANT offers assistantships to two students in the UCA graduate program in English, who play an active and integral role in the production of each issue. For more information on the graduate program contact Dr. Peter Lang directly. We especially invite inquiries from students with a strong interest in contemporary poetry and/or editing and publishing.
Hudson-Fowler Prize
To honor the invaluable contributions of the journal’s two longest-serving editors (Richard Hudson and James Fowler) and to recognize truly distinctive originality and quality of poetic expression, the SLL created the Hudson-Fowler Prize in Poetry in 2023.
