APA Summer Science Fellowships for Undergraduates

The Science Directorate of the American Psychological Association (APA) will sponsor its Summer Science Fellowship program, hosted by the Psychology Department at George Mason University, June 8 – July 20, 2013. Up to twelve students who are current juniors will be selected for this six-week, paid summer research internship. Students will be selected for experiences in one of several areas of psychology, including biological, applied developmental, applied cognitive, neuroscience, clinical, school, and industrial/ organizational.

Students currently enrolled in US or Canadian colleges are eligible. International students at US or Canadian institutions may apply; US citizenship is not required. Students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

The application deadline is February 11, 2013. Please encourage your best students to apply for this outstanding program.

Goodbye Ms. Nancy Hicks – Happy Retirement

Ms. Nancy Hicks was a valued colleague, instructor, and friend for many years. She decided to retire from our department after the Fall semester and she will be sincerely missed by all of us.

Congratulations to Shana Southard-Dobbs, winner of the American Psychological Association’s Graduate Student Teaching Excellence Award! Shana was a 2005 graduate of the Community Counseling program and is currently a doctoral student in Experimental Psychology at the University of North Texas. We are proud of you!!

Study Abroad Opportunities in Italy and India

This Summer, Dr. Rowell will host a class in India and Dr. Sobel will host a class in Italy. For those interested in the Florence, Italy class, an informational meeting will be held Thu, Nov 29, X-period, in room 118 of the Business Building.

Another Grant Awarded for the Arkansas Symposium for Psychology Students

The Psi Chi International Honor Society awarded a $1000 grant to support the ASPS conference. Congrats to the faculty and students on the steering committee.

Community Mental Health: Not for the Faint of Heart

Everyone is invited to hear a presentation on the field of community mental health by two mental health professionals (Jamie Battles-Garcia & Maureen Ryan-McGehee. The presentation will be Tue, Nov 27 from 1:40-2:30 in Mashburn 239.

Grant Awarded for Arkansas Symposium for Psychology Students

Dr. Shawn Charlton, Dr. Bill Lammers, and Paula Simon were awarded a $3000 grant from the UCA Foundation to partially fund a keynote speaker and book signing at the ASPS conference in April. The speaker, Dr. Barbara Kirwin, is a nationally-recognized forensic psychologist who has appeared on television shows and written several books.

Fall Career Fair

The School of Professional Psychology at Forest Institute (http://www.forest.edu/) will be attending the Fall Career Fair on Wednesday, November 11, from 9:00 to 2:00 in the Student Center Ballroom.
