John Murphy, Professor of Psychology and Counseling, recently conducted two days of training on solution – focused therapy for mental health therapists and counselors in Laurens County School District 56 in Clinton, South Carolina. Dr. Murphy is a nationally recognized expert on solution-focused therapy for school-age children.

Dr. Paul Nail will present on his theory and research on social influence at a conference titled “Science Meets Social Science” in Wroclaw, Poland, in March 2017. Dr. Nail’s model of ways people respond when pressured to conform to a group was picked up by a group of professors from Wroclaw, Poland, who work in an emerging area of physics known as socio-physical modeling. During his trip to Poland, Dr. Nail will be a visiting professor at the Department of Theoretical Physics, University of Science and Technology in Poland.

Dr. Kevin Rowell, Ms. Shannon Riedmueller, and Dr. Art Gillaspy spoke to ~400 students yesterday at Conway High School as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. They presented on careers in mental health, education necessary to work in mental health settings, and programs at UCA related to mental and behavioral health.

Savannah Cavender, Senior Psychology major, and Dr. Shawn Charlton published an article, Virtual Events: Networking without Traveling, in the Winter 2017 edition of Eye on Psi Chi, the newsletter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology.

Psychology major, Taylor Dague, and her adviser, Dr. Kenith Sobel, have been awarded a SURF for Taylor’s project “Using Visual Search to Investigate Whether Cognition Directly Affects Perception.”

Cory Cobb, a 3rd year Counseling Psychology doctoral student, and Dr. Dong Xie had a paper, titled “Perceptions of Legal Status: Associations with Psychosocial Experiences among Undocumented Latino/a Immigrants”, accepted for publication in the Journal of Counseling Psychology. The paper was co-authored with Drs. Allan Meca, Seth Schwartz, and Rhoda Moise from the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at University of Miami.

Dr. Paul Nail recently gave an invited address to the Arkansas Psychology Consortium on bullying research conducted with Dr. Simon and Dr. Bihm. Excellent work!

Dr. Heather Martens and Dr. Chad Lairamore (Physical Therapy) published an article titled “The role of student adaptability in interprofessional education” in the Journal of Interprofessional Education & Practice.

Dr. John Murphy, professor of psychology and counseling, presented a full-day training workshop entitled, “Brief Solution – Focused Counseling in Schools” to 200 people at the Massachusetts School Psychologists Association (MSPA) Fall Conference on Friday, June 28, in Norwood, Massachusetts.
