SOAR Frequently Asked Questions

Registration and Payment Questions

What is the difference between a 1-Day session and a 2-Day session?

A 2-Day SOAR session covers all the same material and information you will receive at a 1-Day session but has additional sessions and group activities for both students and parents. You also have the option of going on a personalized class schedule tour hosted by a Student Orientation Staff (SOS) member and an in-depth tour of some campus facilities including the HPER Center and Library. You can find more information by viewing the schedules online: 1-day session or 2-day session

Is coming to SOAR required?

Attending SOAR to complete your university orientation and register for classes is required for all incoming freshmen. If you have extenuating circumstances and cannot attend in-person, please reach out to us at and we can work together to make an alternative arrangement.

Do my parents need to come?

They do not have to, but we encourage them to! Our parent program will provide them the opportunity to discover UCA. Parents will be involved in informative discussions on student services, academics, campus resources, fees and expenses. Small groups of administrators and current students will meet informally with parents to answer their questions and discuss any concerns. Please note that this programming is created for parents of incoming freshmen; siblings, significant others, and non-parental figures will not find the same value in attending. As a partner with the Department of New Student Programs, Country Inns & Suites is offering a reduced rate for all students, parents, and other guests attending SOAR! Visit the Hotel Information page for more information.

What does the fee cover?

The fee to attend SOAR covers orientation materials, programming costs, refreshments and meals (one meal for the 1-Day session and three meals for the 2-Day session). For students attending the 2-Day session, lodging on campus during SOAR is encouraged! You will need to bring your own bedding and linens as you will be staying in one of our residence halls. Lodging on campus is an additional $15 and you will stay overnight in Donaghey Hall. Make sure to indicate on your registration form that you would like to stay on campus.

Why do I have to pay for orientation?

All schools do charge in some way for orientation. Many schools include a one-time orientation/new student fee on your student bill. UCA does not include this on your student bill but instead charges at registration.

What if I can no longer attend the SOAR session I registered for?

You can change your registration to another date by completing this form (Change/Cancel Soar Session). Session changes must be made no later than 2 weeks prior to your session. If you no longer plan to attend UCA, you can cancel your SOAR registration by completing this form (Change/Cancel Soar Session) as well. Cancellations must be made no later than 2 weeks prior to your session to receive a refund.

What if I have a conflict and am not able to attend the in-person SOAR dates this summer?

We understand there are extenuating circumstances. Email us at with your situation and we will work with you. Please include information about the situation that conflicts with SOAR dates, full name, UCA student ID number, and phone number. Academic Advising is prepared to see a limited number of students virtually after the June SOAR sessions have concluded. We will share your information with Academic Advising and they will reach out to you directly to schedule the virtual appointment.

I’m already registered for SOAR, but I need to add a parent to my registration. Can I do that?

Yes! Please complete this form (Add Parent Form) and make sure to register them for the same session option you are currently registered for. (1-day or 2-day) The parent registration must match the student registration option, regardless if the parent only plans to attend for one day of a 2-day session.

Planning your SOAR experience

What time should I arrive and where do I go?

For a 1-Day session: Check in begins at 8:30am at Old Main Hall and the day will end around 4:30pm. You can view the 1-day session schedule here: 1 Day Session Schedule. For a 2-Day session: Check-in is from 12-1pm at Donaghey Hall with the opening session at 1:30pm; programming will end around 4:00pm on the second day. You can view the 2-day session schedule here: 2 Day Session Schedule. Both the 1-day and 2-day sessions have parking available at Donaghey Hall, on the corner of Donaghey Ave and Bruce St. (Map to Donaghey Hall/SOAR Check In) If you are staying on campus for a 2-day session, you will immediately put your belongings in your room and have an opportunity to make your bed and settle in. There will be a shuttle to take you to Old Main Hall for the opening session.

Is there a schedule of the sessions?

You can view the 1-day session schedule here: 1 Day Session Schedule. You can view the 2-day session schedule here: 2 Day Session Schedule.

What should I bring?

Students should bring the following items: comfortable walking shoes, comfortable clothes, writing utensil, notebook, spending money, light jacket (meeting rooms are sometimes cool). For students attending a 2-Day session and staying on campus they should also bring these items: toiletry products, pillow, sheets and blanket/sleeping bag, towels, shower shoes if staying on campus.

Do I have to stay on campus for a 2-Day session?

No, you do not have to stay on campus. However, staying overnight on campus at SOAR gives you a glimpse of what living in a residence hall will be like and you get to stay in the newest residence hall on campus, Donaghey Hall! Donaghey Hall is an upperclassmen hall during the academic year. Because of Covid-19 safety measures, you will be in a room by yourself (no roommate). Remember this is a residence hall (not a hotel) so sheets, pillows, toiletries, and towels are something you will need to bring. Staying on-campus during your SOAR session is an additional $15, but where else can you stay overnight for just $15 a night?! On-campus accommodations are only available to the incoming student and not for parents/guests.

Where can my parents/guests stay?

Parents/guests can stay at the Country Inn & Suites with a discounted rate for SOAR attendees. Visit the Hotel Information page for more information.

Do I need to bring anything to register for classes?

Please bring your MyUCA log-in information (username and password) along with a photo ID to have your Bear Card made. You should bring copies of AP scores and CLEP scores, college transcripts if you have taken courses at other colleges (even if you have sent your transcript to UCA), Accuplacer exam results, and foreign language placements results. You may call the Academic Advising Center at 501-450-5149 or email for more information. If you do not have certain scores or transcripts available before SOAR, you will still receive your class schedule. Your advisor will provide you with direction of what to do once you receive your scores and/or transcripts.

If you have more questions or need more information, please call us at 501-450-5873 or email! We would be happy to talk with you about the SOAR experience.
