Fundraiser for Levon Helm Memorial Project

The Levon Helm Memorial Project was set up with the goal of saving the boyhood home of Levon Helm in Marvell, Arkansas. He was born in Turkey Scratch, Arkansas, attended high school in Marvell and became a multiple Grammy award winner, acted in The Right Stuff, Coal Minors Daughter (among others) and an inductee to The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of The Band.

The students raised $1808.00 for the project with a house party featuring The Wildflower Review (one of which opened for some of Levon’s concerts.) Levon’s daughter, Amy Helm, reached out to us and helped get us in contact with several key people that knew her dad. My Historic Preservation class and Advanced class all had parts in the project. Historic Preservation did all of the research for the Determination of Eligibility for the Department of Arkansas Heritage and The National Trust for Hustoric Preservation. After going down to Marvell to see the site, the house and an additional property, Advanced class designed a Visitors Center/Museum, Restaurant and concert stage for the property.

Anna Lee Amsten, made famous by Levon writing about her in 2 songs, The Weight and Anna Lee, attended the fundraiser and was so moved by the students efforts. (She cried twice at the fundraiser.) Artist Kevin Kresse (who sculpted the bronze bust of Levon for the project) also came and donated his study sketches for the students to auction. On December 2nd, students and Dr. Bryan drove down to Marvell to present the project to Barbie Washburn who heads up the Levon Helm Memorial Project.

Fun Fiesta at the Faulkner County Senior Center

Students in Nutrition Services Administration fed about 200 seniors this November. The class planned and executed a theme meal with a fiesta flair. Decorations included balloons, pinatas, streamers, and more. The menu was confetti slaw, seasoned green beans, fiesta rice, taco salad casserole, and pound cake with fruit compote. We  would like to say THANK YOU very much to the Arkansas Geriatric Education Collaborative, which is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program, for helping us produce such a wonderful meal and serve seniors in our community.

AAFCS Student Leadership Conference at UCA

On Friday, October 6, 2017 the Arkansas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (ArFCS) held its 2017 Fall Leadership Conference at the University of Central Arkansas. Arkansas Education Television Network (AETN) was generous to allow ArAFCS to use their facilities for the conference. The meeting focused on one of AAFCS’ signature initiatives, FCSfit, by relating financial fitness concepts to the field of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Over 40 Family and Consumer Sciences professional and student members from four universities  attended the conference. They gained insightful financial literacy information from four dynamic speakers that related their presentations to a Family and Consumer Sciences related field/occupation.Additionally, members were able to network with fellow students and professionals, build on existing knowledge that relates financial literacy components to the discipline, and acquire skills to apply to their personal and professional lives.

ArAFCS was #FCSfit on October 6th because we believe that #FCSisTHEanswer and equips students and adults with the necessary skills and knowledge to achieve an optimal quality of life!

It was an exciting day for professional and students! One student reflected about the day.  What I took away from the conference is that the choices we make now are very important. I know this is a saying that gets tossed around a lot, but I also don’t think it’s something taken too seriously. The speakers at the conference primarily focused on financial fitness, and that’s important because finances are one of the most sensitive subject areas, but also one of the most important to have knowledge about. Each speaker gave their own presentation, but all of them flowed together well. So, if I had to put what I got out of the conference in one sentence, it would be to make smart decisions now to ensure a bright future for yourself and others around you!

THANK YOU!

This summer McAllister Hall’s 2nd floor went through a HUGE makeover. See pictures below for some before and after shots. To say THANK YOU the dietetic interns prepared a fantastic lunch for the Physical Plant (middle picture) with BBQ Chicken, Potato Salad, Green Salad, Baked Beans, and Chocolate Chip Cookies. We are so grateful for the funding from UCA Provost’s Office, College of Health and Behavioral Sciences Dean’s Office, the work of our physical plant staff, and the support from Tipton Equipment and Fureigh Electric!! THANK YOU!

We need your help to endow this scholarship!
