Dr. Buck Foster’s So Great Was the Slaughter Selected as one of the 2024 Arkansas Gems

The Arkansas Center for the Book at the Arkansas State Library is pleased to announce that Dr. Buck Foster’s So Great Was the Slaughter: Market Hunters, Sportsmen, and Wildlife Conservation in Arkansas has been selected for inclusion on the 2025 Arkansas Gems poster.
Arkansas Gems is an annual publication of the Arkansas Center for the Book, the official state affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. Launched in 2004 and formerly known as Fresh from Arkansas, the project celebrates notable works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art with strong ties to Arkansas. Each year, approximately twenty titles are selected based on literary or artistic merit, originality, and regional significance. Selected book jackets are featured on a colorful, poster-sized publication distributed to all public library branches across the state.
In addition to statewide distribution, Arkansas Gems are showcased nationally at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC, where they are featured in the “Roadmap to Reading” (formerly the Parade of the States). The poster has proven to be a popular attraction for thousands of visitors interested in regional literature and culture.
The Arkansas Gems project supports the Arkansas Center for the Book’s mission to encourage reading, writing, and literacy throughout the state. The initiative is made possible through a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Arkansas State Library. Posters are distributed free of charge, with a typical print run of 1,000 to 1,500 copies.

UCA History Department Book Bash: Celebrating Books Published by UCA History Faculty

Join us on April 25th at 3pm in the Hall of Fame Room at Estes Stadium to celebrate four (!) UCA History faculty who have published books during the 24-25 academic year. This event highlights the hard work and intellectual contributions of Dr. Michael Mwenda Kithinji, editor of The Historical Dictionary of Kenya; Dr. Kenneth Barnes, author of Mob Rule in the Ozarks; Dr. Vaughn Scribner, author of Under Alien Skies; and Dr. Buckley T Foster, author of So Great Was the Slaughter. The event will feature free food and is open to all students, faculty, staff, and history fans.
Journalism professor has book published

Rob Moritz, a Lecturer I in Journalism, has written a biography of his grandfather, who was a pioneer in forensic pathology, that was recently published by CRC Press (Taylor & Francis Group). Dr. Alan R. Moritz and Forensic Pathology: Tales That Dead Men Tell, recounts the career of Dr. Moritz (1899-1986), using personal papers and correspondence, interviews, newspaper accounts and other sources, including archived materials from Harvard Medical School, the Rockefeller Foundation, Case Western Reserve and the University Hospitals of Cleveland.
The biography details many of his grandfather’s investigative techniques and research findings that are still used today. High-profile investigations Dr. Moritz worked on are also detailed, including the death of actor George Reeves, television’s first Superman; the assassination of President John F. Kennedy; the Sam Shepherd case, the Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire, the Attica prison riots and the Texas Tower fire, to name a few.
Moritz also details a number of his grandfather’s first-hand accounts of some history’s darkest moments, including a lynching during the “Red Summer” of 1919, the rise of Nazi Germany and the death of a black dissident during the Apartheid-era in South Africa.
The book is available on Amazon, Routledge, the UCA Bookstore and at various other bookstores.
