The 2024-2025 UCA Visiting Poet Series will conclude April 22 with a public reading and book signing by current Louisiana Poet Laureate Alison Pelegrin at 7 p.m. in the McCastlain Art Lecture Hall on the UCA campus. The series is jointly sponsored by the School of Language & Literature and SLANT, the School’s international journal of contemporary poetry.

Alison Pelegrin was appointed Poet Laureate of Louisiana in 2023. She is also Writer-in-Residence at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, where she has taught for more than twenty years. A native of Gretna, located just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans, Pelegrin has lived in Louisiana her entire life, except for a period of three years in Fayetteville while working towards an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Arkansas.

She is the author of six books of poetry, including her most recent collection, Our Lady of Bewilderment (Louisiana State University Press, 2022), and her poems have also appeared in notable literary journals such as Poetry, Ploughshares, The Southern Review, The Missouri Review, and The Bennington Review. In addition, she has received multiple notable fellowships and grants, including a fellowship from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, a Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, an ATLAS Grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents, and in 2024 an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship.

Bear Biographies: A Library of Lived Experiences is an annual outreach event hosted by the library with support from multiple campus partners. It is an opportunity for our campus to come together and learn from folks who come from different lived experiences and backgrounds by engaging in meaningful conversations.

Participants can either be Books or Readers. Books sign up in advance to share about aspects of their identities where they have experienced prejudice and bias. Readers attend the event and engage in dialogue with the Books by asking thoughtful questions about their experiences.

The goal of Bear Biographies is to break down barriers caused by harmful stereotypes and build a stronger, more connected campus community. Please join us on Tuesday, April 8th, from 12-4 in Torreyson Library. It is a drop-in event, so come by whenever you have time!

Saturday April 5th UCA will host over 330 6th-12th graders for the State competition for National History Day in Arkansas. We need judges in 5 categories: Websites, Documentary, Exhibits, Performance, and Papers.

We need kind people who like students. There will be training on the day of the competitions from 8-9am then judge teams will interview students until about 11:30. Then you will deliberate to pick the top projects. You will receive a voucher for lunch. 90% of the students have already been eliminated and the choices made Saturday will determine who will represent our state at Nationals in June.

Join the UCA Wind Ensemble in concert on Wednesday, March 19th at 7:30 PM in the beautiful Windgate Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. Our performance features the UCA Tapestry Treble and Natural Statesmen in a multimedia spectacle on an epic work by Howard Hanson, Song of Democracy. It’s thrilling anthems will resonate with all Americans regardless of political affiliation. Also featured on this concert are Robert Kurka’s Good Soldier Schweik Suite, and Reynaldo Hahn’s La Bal de Beatrice d’Este.

Crystal Wagner holds an MFA from the University of Tennessee. In 2013 she was awarded the highly coveted Pollock-Krasner Grant. Wagner’s interest in combining 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional forms, alternative use of materials, and massive site-specific installations, have led to her artwork being exhibited globally.

Commissions include installations for NIKE’s KOBE X Blackout Experience, Bombay Sapphire, TOYOTA, and Warner Brothers, “Get Animated Invasion,” at LA’s Grammy Museum. Her two works for Viacom, including a 117 ft piece at their headquarters in Times Square, was featured by the New York Times and VH1’s Top 20 Countdown.
