Football Volunteer Opportunities

Hello UCA Community!

I hope everyone is excited about the upcoming 2025 UCA Football season! The Staff Senate along with the Football Committee are looking for volunteers to help out for the season. We are looking for at least 7-9 volunteers to help out throughout Estes Stadium.

Home game dates and times are as follows:
September 6th @ 6 pm (Volunteers arrive at 3:00 pm)
September 13th @ 6 pm (Volunteers arrive at 3:00 pm)
October 4th @ 4 pm (Volunteers arrive at 1:00 pm)
November 1st @ 4 pm (Volunteers arrive at 1:00 pm)
November 22th @ 4 pm (Volunteers arrive at 1:00 pm)

Book Awards

Vaughn Scribner’s book, “Under Alien Skies: Environment, Suffering, and the Defeat of the British Military in Revolutionary America (UNC Press, 2024)” has recently garnered national praise. It won the Society of the Cincinnati Prize, a major award given annually for an outstanding book that advances our understanding of the American Revolution and its legacy. Other recipients of the award include three Pulitzer Prize winners, two Bancroft prize winners, and one Guggenheim Fellow. Scribner will receive the award at a ceremony in D.C. at the Society’s headquarters on October 6.

“Under Alien Skies” was also a finalist (one of three) for the Gilder Lehrman Military History Prize, which “recognizes the best book on American military history in English distinguished by its scholarship, its contribution to the literature, and its appeal to the broadest possible general reading public.” The winner will be announced in early October, with a ceremony for the winner and finalists to be held in New York City at the Yale Club on December 2.

Faculty for Successful Students – Weeks 2 & 3

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Academic Leadership (CETAL), in collaboration with Student Success Services, is excited to continue the Faculty for Successful Students campaign. This initiative equips faculty with simple, practical strategies to support students in developing habits that foster their academic success–particularly among first-year students.

This week’s Faculty for Successful Students focus is: Encourage Time Management. This theme aligns with the student campaign emphasis: PLAN Your Time.

Effective time management skills empower college students to balance academics, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments. This ability leads to reduced stress, increased productivity, and better academic performance, fostering a sense of control and success in their educational journey.

Ways you can Reinforce Success:

  • Discuss how to plan for class assignments; provide tips on managing study time for this course; encourage use of a planner (Student Success offers free UCA Planners).
  • Take time to demonstrate one or two time management strategies that could work in your course (e.g., Weekly Schedule, Daily Top Three, etc.).
  • As often as possible, provide students with an estimated time needed to complete out-of-class assignments in the assignment instructions. Point out these estimated times to students and encourage them to use them when putting out-of-class assignments in their planners.

This lunch program will highlight practical ways to provide feedback that supports student success while keeping your workload manageable.

Volleyball Tournament at Home This Weekend

There’s 3 chances to catch the Sugar Bears at home this weekend! The Central Arkansas Invitational kicks off with the Sugar Bears against the Little Rock Trojans on Friday at 6 PM in the Prince Center. Saturday it’s UCA vs Southeastern Louisiana at noon. Sunday we see the Sugar Bears take on Boston College at 4 PM. Admission is free!

NEW! Trauma-Informed Pedagogy Learning Community

Trauma—including adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), identity-based stress, and economic hardship—can significantly affect students’ ability to focus, stay motivated, retain information, and succeed academically. In this year-long learning community, we will come together to explore the latest research in trauma-informed pedagogy and its application to teaching and learning in our respective courses. Faculty are welcome to attend to discuss challenges we encounter in our classrooms, develop discipline-specific, trauma-informed approaches, and support each other in our efforts to reduce compassion fatigue and stabilize holistic well-being.

Dates: Mondays (9/8, 9/22 & 10/6, 10/20, & 11/3, 11/17)
Time: 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

UCA Public Appearances

The UCA Public Appearance Committee is still in need of 6 part-time volunteers and 3 full-time volunteers for Gin Blossoms and the Spin Doctors on Tuesday, September 9th.
As well as in need of 7 part-time volunteers and 7 full-time volunteers for UPTOWN: A Celebration of Motown and Soul on Thursday, September 25th.

Volunteers who sign up should arrive at the Reynolds Performance Hall Lobby by 5:30 p.m. on the night of the performance. If you’re interested in volunteering, please sign up on the GivePulse page.

Staff members who volunteer for Staff Senate GivePulse events can now earn up to 16 hours of leave time each calendar year that can be used anytime during the year, subject to supervisor approval.
