The University of Central Arkansas was full of future possibilities on April 5, as junior high students from across the region stepped onto campus for Bear Necessities Day—a hands-on event designed to spark early interest in college and show students what life at UCA is all about.
The event welcomed high school juniors from across state lines to explore academic programs, student life, and campus resources through interactive sessions, guided tours, and one-on-one conversations with current students, faculty, and staff. For many attendees, it was their first time on a college campus.
The college search process can feel overwhelming, especially for younger students just starting to explore their options,” said Lizzie Langston, Assistant Director of Campus Preview Days. “[Bear Necessities Day] helps make it all feel more real. When students can see themselves here, walking through residence halls, meeting professors, asking questions–it turns college from a far-off idea into something achievable.”
The day included breakout sessions about exploring academic opportunities, student-led panels, financial aid information, and plenty of time to get answers about what it’s like to be a Bear. Even on this rainy day, the energy was high, and the excitement was real.
Ashley Berry, Director of Admissions, said these early experiences can shape the way students approach their college journey.
Our goal is to help students feel confident and informed as they move toward big decisions,” Berry said. “Bear Necessities gives them a head start.
Bear Necessities Day is one way UCA turns its commitment to access and student success into action—offering students and families more than a tour, but a meaningful first step toward their future.
