UCA’s Corequisite Overview

Our Journey to Full Implementation of Corequisite Remediation

The Department of Student Transitions (formerly University College) at the University of Central Arkansas provided standalone developmental classes for students needing remediation in writing, mathematics, and reading prior to 2012. Because of UCA’s participation in the Complete College America statewide initiative, in the fall of 2012, the department offered its first corequisite developmental course with UNIV 1300: Transitional Writing that was paired with WRTG 1310: Introduction to College Writing. In the fall of 2016, the department converted 100% of the developmental math courses to corequisite: Foundations of College Algebra paired with College Algebra and Foundations of Quantitative Literacy paired with Quantitative Literacy. By fall 2017, the literacy course was redesigned to be a corequisite developmental course to support a history or a philosophy course.  In the fall of 2018, minor changes to course numbers and names were made to allow for consistency and clarity.   The department piloted UNIV 0370: Foundations of College Literacy as the only remediation for Reading and Writing in the spring of 2021.  This will be implemented fully in the fall of 2021.
