Will you be offering Face-to-Face tutoring appointments this Fall?
At this time, we do offer face-to-face appointments. We will continue to monitor Covid best practices and make decisions based on in-person sessions.
I want someone to proofread my project. Can I just drop it off?
At the Center for Writing and Communication (CWC), we want to help you develop your writing and communication skills. We believe that the best way to do this is to have a conversation about your work, focusing initially on big picture issues, like focus and organization. To help students most effectively, we require that students work with us in appointments and do not allow drop off service. Note that the CWC will only work with the original author of an assignment or document.
How do I make an appointment?
To make an appointment, complete the following steps:
- Go to your MyUCA page and search for “Navigate for Students.” Click on the Navigate link.
- Look for the blue “Get Assistance” link on your Navigate student dashboard. You will find it in the top, right-hand corner of your screen. Click on it.
- Under “What type of Appointment,” choose “Tutoring.”
- Under “Service,” hover over “Center for Writing & Communication” and then choose between “Presentation Project” and “Writing Project.”
- Choose your preferred date, and click “Find Available Time.”
- Choose from the listed available times.
- Choose whether you’d like an email, in-person, or virtual/zoom appointment.
- Once you select an appointment time/date, you will have the option to share more information with your tutor. Please let your tutor know what you’d like to focus on during the session (ex. MLA documentation, organization, etc.). You can also explain more about your assignment requirements here.
- Save your appointment.
***Remember that if you choose an email appointment, you need to email a copy or video of your project to cwc@uca.edu before your scheduled appointment time.
How do I cancel my appointment?
If you need to cancel your appointment, simply visit your upcoming appointments in Navigate. Click on the appointment you wish to cancel, scroll to the bottom of the appointment page, and click “Cancel Appointment.”
Alternatively, you can call the CWC at (501) 450-5123 or email cwc@uca.edu to cancel your appointment.
What can I expect at my appointment?
Every session goes a bit differently, but we recommend you come prepared with your assignment sheet, current draft, sources, and specific questions about what you want to work on. Also, let us know if you would like feedback on presentation delivery. The consultant will start by asking you about these things.
How long are appointments?
All appointments are 30 minutes in length. However if you have a special circumstance that would require more tutoring time, such as for a needed accommodation or GRE preparation, please call or email us for an exception. Please note that if you schedule an hour long appointment without first receiving approval, that appointment will be changed to 30 minutes.
How are tutors trained?
The CWC tutors go through a rigorous application and training process. To be considered for the position, they must maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher. They then submit their own work for review and complete an application which requires them to assess sample student writing and a presentation. After that, they complete a semester-long practicum training course during which they train on the job in the CWC.
